One of the most highly-anticipated PlayStation 5 console exclusives of 2022 has to be Square Enix's upcoming action-RPG Forspoken. Forspoken trailers have been turning heads since its reveal, with many fans impressed by the graphics and how the game appears to be taking advantage of the PS5's added horsepower. The Forspoken release date is just a few months away, and so it's no surprise that the game's ESRB rating is now out in the wild.

The ESRB has officially saddled Forspoken with an M for Mature rating, citing Strong Language and Violence. The ESRB rating briefly talks about Forspoken's story and main character Frey, who has to explore a fantasy world and battle monsters. It describes Forspoken's combat as "frenetic" and having "colorful effects, screen-shaking, and cries of pain." The ESRB rating also describes some of the violence that players will see in Forspoken's cut-scenes, like monsters killing people, "a character attempting to jump off a building" (possibly a reference to an attempted suicide), as well as someone being held at gunpoint.

Compared to many other modern games, the violence in Forspoken doesn't seem to be all that extreme. However, the fact that the game would have violent content was apparent from the get-go when its first trailer was revealed. Something that wouldn't be obvious from watching Forspoken trailers is that the game apparently has microtransactions of some kind, if the ESRB rating is accurate.

Besides going into detail about Forspoken's violent combat and strong language, the ESRB rating also claims that the game has "In-Game Purchases." What exactly this will entail remains to be seen. It's not uncommon for single-player games to sell cosmetics to players as microtransactions nowadays, though other games have controversially sold things like performance boosters that let players get an advantage if they're willing to shell out the cash. While this may not sound like a big deal for a single-player game, there is a history of games being balanced in a way to push people to spend money on microtransactions if things like this are featured.

Square Enix itself has not revealed any details about Forspoken microtransactions, and so it's far too early to say if fans need to be worried or not. With the Forspoken release date just a few months away, though, fans should soon learn more about the game's monetization and how exactly it will be incorporating its microtransactions, assuming they are indeed in the game at all.

Forspoken launches May 24 for PC and PS5.
