Universal and Blumhouse's The Forever Purge is set to be the final installment of The Purge franchise. Nowthe first full trailer for The Forever Purge is here, and it looks to be a bloody ending.

Set in the aftermath of The Purge: Election Year, The Forever Purge takes place at a Texas ranch near the American/Mexican border. The film follows a Mexican couple, played by Ana de la Reguera and Tenoch Huerta, who get stranded on the ranch while fleeing a drug cartel. There, they find themselves at the mercy of a group of outsiders who plan to unlawfully continue their own Purge, turning against the couple and trying to eliminate them and anyone who tries to help them.

The events of Election Year led to the Purge officially being abolished. Unfortunately, not everyone's on board and though the group of marauders' attempt to continue their own Purge kind of defeats the one-night-a-year premise, it doesn't seem like these guys are the rational type. The Forever Purge looks to be focused heavily on issues around immigration and the American border, a fitting subject and one that has been a topic of fierce debate and controversy in recent years. It's not hard to see the new film as a commentary on American vigilantes policing the border and the dehumanization that many immigrants face.

The Forever Purge is directed by Everardo Gout and is written by James DeMonaco, the creator of The Purge franchise who directed the first three films and has written the scripts for all five installments. The new film also stars Josh Lucas, Cassidy Freeman, Leven Rambin, Alejandro Edda, and Will Patton. Although it was originally slated for a 2020 release, The Forever Purge was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Purge franchise started back in 2013 with the original film, which saw a wealthy family stranded in their home while they try to survive the titular event. Each film typically takes place in a dystopian future where, for one day of the year, all crime is legal, including murder. The idea is that everyone in this society takes one day of the year to 'purge' all of their violent and criminal urges, and then live in relative peace and prosperity for the rest of the year. However, it turns out this isn't such a great plan!

The sequel, The Purge: Anarchy, expanded the scope by showing how the Purge affected other citizens. The third film in the franchise, The Purge: Election Year, showed a presidential candidate attempting to put an end to the barbaric practice, only for her opponents to hatch a plan to have her killed during the annual tradition. Lastly, the fourth film, The First Purge, was a prequel that told the story of how the Purge began.

The Forever Purge is set to be released in theatres on July 2nd, 2021.
