Unfortunately for new players, it's hard to deny that Football Manager 22 has a steep learning curve, with many of its features seeming like rocket science at first. One feature that is significantly more complex in the Football Manager series than games like FIFA is transfers. Sealing a transfer in Football Manager 22 is far easier said than done, with firm negotiation, additional clauses, and discussions with agents all playing a part.

So, for new players who may be struggling to get to grips with making transfer offers, we've made this guide to detail the process.

First Steps

Kamara transfer options

First things first, the manager needs to select the player that they wish to submit an offer for. They will then be hit with a wall of information about the player, especially if they've scouted them. Just underneath the player's name is a dropdown menu titled "Transfer." The menu will provide the following options:

  • Transfer Status will give the manager a general breakdown of the player's current situation regarding transfers. Their estimated value, whether or not they're transfer listed (put up for sale), the names of any other clubs interested in the player, and a few more details will be included.
  • Ask Agent About Availability does exactly what it says on the tin, opening up dialogue options for the manager to speak with a player's agent. This is actually a violation of FIFA's regulations, though the rule is so often disregarded in real life that it was recently included in the series, something that FIFA probably aren't too pleased about.
  • Declare Interest is another underhanded tactic, letting the manager tell publicly announce that they're interested in the player, putting pressure on the selling club.
  • Offer Trail is predominantly for signing young players who are free agents, so it isn't usually relevant when making a transfer offer.
  • Make Enquiry sends a request to the player's club to give an asking price for the player. This enquiry can be rejected.
  • Add To Shortlist adds the player to a personal list for the manager.
  • Add As Transfer Target is for those who would rather let their Director of Football handle transfers. The option will open a list of instructions to give the Director of Football when trying to sign the player.
  • Make An Offer, as the name suggests, lets the manager submit an offer for the player on behalf of their team.

Making An Offer

After selecting Make An Offer, a new screen of information will appear. This screen will give details on how much the club can afford, legal details such as the player's work permit application, and an estimation of their value.

The offer details are on the right side of the screen. An amount of money will often be pre-entered in the Fee section; this is an estimation of the player's worth, though it's often considerably less than what the selling team will demand.

Before the manager starts their first negotiation, it's worth having a good read through the additional fees and additional clauses. With deals becoming continuously more expensive, additional fees and clauses are common today, so it's worth including some to try and spread the cost out.

Sealing The Deal

Like any negotiation, the manager should make their first offer lower than what they expect to pay. Don't go too low, however, as it could offend the selling club and stop the deal dead in its tracks. It's also important not to draw the negotiation out for too long, as the selling club may get frustrated.

Managers can either submit a formal offer or click Suggests Terms when they've got a fee set; the suggest terms option is the better choice when aiming to negotiate, as it will make the process far quicker and smoother. If the manager doesn't have the available funds to make the deal, they can select the Interact with Board option to ask for more money, like a kid asking their parents for change to buy candy.

Once the fee is agreed upon, the team can submit their formal offer for the player. When finalized, the buying team will have permission to get the ball rolling on officially welcoming the player to their team.

Football Manager 22's beta is out now on PC. The full game is set to release on November 9th for PC, Xbox, and mobile, while a Nintendo Switch version is also in the works.
