The Flintstones is one of those rare shows that has managed to stay in the popular consciousness despite not having a proper series running for quite some time now. As what is arguably the most famous Hanna-Barbera cartoon, the Flintstones have had quite a few reboots, re-imaginings, and re-releases over the decades, but very few instances have been as long-lasting and popular as the original show's characters and designs, but Warner Bros. Animation is hoping to change that.

One of those latest Flintstones revival attempts is a project from Fox Entertainment, Warner Bros. Animation, and Elizabeth Banks' Brownstone Productions, which is set to be a sequel to the original show. According to current information, the project will be set around 20 years after the original and follows the Flintstone family, with Pebbles as the now-adult star of the piece and Fred on the verge of retirement.  In addition to serving as an executive producer on the series, Banks will provide the voice of Pebbles.

At the initial announcement, The Flintstones sequel series didn't have an official home, but now the show is confirmed to be headed to Fox Entertainment, joining the company's Sunday animation lineup. Fox's President of Entertainment, Michael Thorn, welcomed the project to their lineup, paying lip-service to the reputation and legacy of the IP: "[The Flintstones] imprint on the animation universe is undeniable and the idea of adapting it for today’s audience is a challenge we here at FOX are very much looking forward to taking on." The company also announced the official title of this upcoming revival series, which will be named Bedrock.

It is quite the undertaking to revive an iconic franchise that began over 60 years ago, as King of the Hill writer Brent Forrester may somewhat understand. Fox seems to be quite interested in the Flintstones though, having also acquired the rights to the original series that debuted in 1960, which will make its way to streaming on Tubi this May.

Bedrock isn't the first attempt to make the Flintstones magic happen again either. Family Guy and America Dad! creator Seth McFarlane was famously attached to a separate revival series that never managed to make it out the door. Hopefully, this latest attempt goes more smoothly than that project did, and Bedrock gets a proper debut.

There's no word on when the series will actually make its first showing though, as the project is still in the early phases. While the various studios and creatives involved seem excited about the project, there hasn't been much to chew on for fans. Hopefully, as the series gets rolling in production, audiences will start to see more of the reimagined Flintstones and what their world looks like 20 years after folks saw them last.

The Flintstones will be available on Tubi starting May 1, 2021.
