Five Nights at Freddy’s creator Scott Cawthon is teasing what appears to be the next game in the franchise on his website with a new image and some hints as what the project could involve.
Visitors to Scott Cawthon’s website will be greeted with a mysterious teaser for what is likely the next game in the Five Nights at Freddy’s series.
The first, and most prominent, piece of this puzzle is the image of an ominous clown taking up the better part of the main page. On top of the image are the words “Sister Location” and “There was never just one”, which helps to fuel speculation. This is a similar tactic that has been used before when teasing previous games.
For those who are unaware of Cawthon’s work, Five Nights at Freddy’s is a popular indie point-and-click horror game set in the fictional restaurant “Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza” — think the Twilight Zone’s version of Chucky Cheese — where players take on the role of a security guard. When the restaurant closes for the night, the animatronic animals go haywire and players must use security cameras to track their moments and avoid being killed.
Since the first game’s release in 2014, it has already spawned three sequels and one spin-off, which bombed due to complaints that it felt unfinished and was quickly pulled from sale. Outside of one major flub, the series has remained fairly popular and there was even talk of a Five Nights at Freddy’s fim. It has been almost a year since the latest game, Five Nights at Freddy’s 4, dropped so it is no surprise that the next game is being teased. But it is unclear whether this will be a direct sequel or another attempt at a spin-off.
Analyzing the evidence, it is clear that the clown on the front page shares a similar design style to previous characters in the series, which would strongly suggest he will be included in the cast or even play a more prominent role in the story. The other clues, especially “Sister Location”, likely suggests a change of scenery.
If this new game is taking place somewhere else, then it could indeed be a spin-off. The clown is particularly strong evidence of that, since the series so far has predominantly featured animals as the chief machine menaces. It is also worth noting that if the phrase “There was never just one” is true, then there could be any number of evil pizza restaurants in the Five Night’s at Freddy’s universe, which would open the door wide for more games in the franchise.
At this point it is all conjecture, but what is clear is Cawthorn has something in the works. Whether that will be another addition to the main series or something else entirely is not clear as of yet, but stay tuned to Game Rant for news on this upcoming game as details are released.
