Five Nights at Freddy’s has been going strong since 2014. What started as Scott Cawthon’s take on an animatronic nightmare simulator has become a thriving franchise of games, books, and an upcoming FNAF movie. The story has also taken on a life of its own, with a massive web of serial killing, haunted machinery, and corporate negligence being spun over the course of many games. Its latest entry is Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach.

In this game, Fazbear Entertainment’s influence and technology have expanded to the point where it was able to build Freddy Fazbear’s Mega Pizza Plex, and a new set of animatronic mascots that are self-aware enough to act as employees. After Glamrock Freddy malfunctions live on stage in FNAF: Security Breach’s opening, he wakes up to the sound of a distressed young boy named Gregory trying to hide from the security guard Vanessa. The pair have a lot of work to do to get Gregory out safely, and discussing where their journey leads necessitates spoilers for Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach.

The FNAF franchise is no stranger to having multiple endings, but those are typically consecutive and unlocked through beating bonus challenges. All of Security Breach’s endings are separate, and they each offer a brief insight into the world. The simplest one to get is progressing the plot until it’s 6:00 a.m., and then leaving through the Mega Pizza Plex’s front doors. This is the lone one-star ending, and reveals that Gregory is a homeless orphan. He returns to his cardboard box home for some much-deserved sleep only to be jumped by Vanny, the game’s human antagonist.

Gregory won’t make it far on his own, but fortunately he has the franchise’s first unambiguously good Freddy Fazbear on his side. One two-star ending sees the duo ride off into the sunset, with a Glamrock Mr. Hippo (FNAF’s resident joke character) replacing Freddy as the animatronic band’s singer. It’s a touching ending, but doesn’t resolve much. Vanny and the animatronics need to be dealt with, and Gregory will sometimes have the chance to wreck one and harvest a part for Freddy. These have gameplay and story benefits, but will also lead to a couple of the animatronics becoming more aggressive.

Dealing With Vanny

With new claws and eyes in tow, using six golden plushies to unlock the prize counter emergency exit will give the heroes the chance to burn the restaurant down. Vanny appears on the roof to capture Gregory, but using Roxy’s enhanced eyes Freddy can see through her jamming signals. He tackles Vanny off the roof and bids Gregory farewell. On the ground below, Gregory unmasks the dead Vanny to reveal Vanessa the security guard, who was already suspect. However, as the camera pans back up, a mournful Vanessa is seen on the roof in her normal uniform. Judging by FNAF’s history, this is probably a ghost, but her behavioral shift goes unexplained in this ending.

Alternatively, Gregory can elect to take the fight to Vanny’s lair deep in the building. Freddy is mobbed by the generic STAFF robots, but Gregory manages to direct them toward “disassembling” Vanny instead. Freddy calls him a superstar one last time before shutting down. While this solves the restaurant’s problems, it would be ideal if everyone could live. This is possible through the “Savior” ending, accessible by completing the first two Princess Quest minigames and then the third in Vanny’s lair. Gregory is able to salvage Freddy’s head, and a now-peaceful Vanessa leaves the pizzeria with the pair. The other animatronics don’t even need to be mangled for this conclusion, which really hammers home how perfect the lone three-star ending is.

Five Nights at Freddy’s Old Hauntings Aren’t Over

However, that raises the question of why a bunch of arcade machines with references to past games were tied to Vanessa’s allegiance. That is answered in the explicitly marked “Canon” ending, which is also a two-star ending due to the animatronics being defeated but not Vanny. With all of Freddy’s upgrades obtained for an easy journey, Gregory and Freddy can take the old elevator down to a surprise: the burnt-out husk of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza Place. This place is still haunted by a feral mass made up of the melted animatronics supposedly destroyed in Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator (aka FNAF 5), now known as the Blob.

However, it’s also haunted by the digital ghost of William Afton, the “purple guy” who serves as the franchise’s overarching villain. His Glitchtrap persona had brainwashed Vanessa via the VR experience premiered in FNAF: Help Wanted, and she has diverted the building’s power toward restoring Afton’s Springtrap body. Gregory and Freddy are able to burn down the ancient pizzeria one last time, and the Blob prevents Afton from escaping. While this ending is a happy one, it leaves Vanny’s status up in the air. Having a copycat killer and a good animatronic around does leave room for more games, and Five Nights at Freddy’s likely has stories left to tell.

Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach is available now for PC, PS4, and PS5.
