A Five Nights at Freddy's movie was announced all the way back in 2015 when Warner Bros.-owned New Line Cinema acquired the rights to the hugely popular indie game series. The games follow an unnamed security guard who must survive the night at a pizzeria where the animatronic robots come to life. A survival horror game with plenty of jump scares, many were excited to see how the big-screen adaptation would turn out.

Hopefully, Five Nights at Freddy's fans won't have to wait much longer for the movie adaptation to be released. Significant progress is being made on the movie, with the project now having secured a director and a new production company is attached to it as well.

The movie will be directed by Chris Columbus, the director behind Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of SecretsHome Alone, and Mrs. Doubtfire. Columbus also wrote Gremlins and produced Night at the Museum 2, two movies known for their scares and comedy hijinks.

Blumhouse Productions, the company behind Get Out and The Purge, is now in charge of the movie having acquired the rights from New Line Cinema last year. Blumhouse's founder and CEO Jason Blum will co-produce the Five Nights at Freddy's movie alongside Columbus and the game's developer Scott Cawthon. Gil Kenan, who was initially attached as director when the project was with New Line Cinema, is now listed as a scriptwriter on IMDB. However, it's unclear if Kenan is still part of the project now that Blumhouse is in charge.

The Five Nights at Freddy's franchise has a hugely passionate fanbase, something which Cawthon has spoken about before. For example, players have created some brilliantly inventive mods to get even more out of the games. It's quite clear that fans will have a lot of high hopes for the movie adaptation of the game and that there will be huge pressure on Columbus and the team at Blumhouse Productions to get this one right. This is especially true given how long the movie has been in the works and the fact that the rights have changed hands.

Many gamers will also note that there have been plenty of poorly received movie adaptations in the past and they don't want the Five Nights at Freddy's movie to be a critical dud too. There is currently no release date attached to the film but fans will have their fingers crossed that whenever it's released, it can live up to their expectations.
