The long-awaited Five Nights at Freddy's film is finally moving forward. Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse, confirmed that Emma Tammi would be directing the film.Five Nights at Freddy's is a popular horror game created by Scott Cawthon. First released in 2014, the video game quickly grew into a favorite on the internet and spawned an entire franchise. The game centers on Mike Schmidt, a night security guard hired to watch over a Chuck E Cheese-esque restaurant called Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. It quickly becomes apparent that Mike is not guarding the restaurant, as the animatronics wake at night and terrorize Mike throughout his shift.Jason Blum, who recently asked fans to give the Five Nights at Freddy's film a 'rest for 2 seconds,' finally revealed some new details on the film. Blum tweeted out that Jim Henson's Creature Shop, the legendary special and visual effects company, will be working on the animatronics for the film. Additionally, filming will begin in February of 2023, just four months from now. "Five Nights at Freddy's is more consistently asked about than any other film I’ve ever worked on, and I’m thrilled to confirm it’s finally happening!” said Blum in a statement. “With Emma Tammi at the helm, we’re committed to making Scott’s vision of the movie come to life. Rest assured, it will be and is worth the wait."
The news about Jim Henson's Creature Shop being involved is not new, but the information about when filming will begin and its director is. Tammi has a few notable directing credits to her name, including the 2018 film The Wind and two episodes of Into the Dark. Her work on Five Nights at Freddy's appears to be her highest-profile work yet, but her previous work appears to veer into the horror genre quite often.
Five Nights at Freddy's has been ripe for a film adaptation for some time now. The series has always had a strong fandom, producing countless memes, fan art, and fan games for the franchise. With a built-in audience and a story that's full of lore that's easily turned cinematic, it must have been a no-brainer for Blumhouse to adapt the game into a film.
The indie game horror game has come very far from its humble beginnings. Cawthon created Five Nights at Freddy's as a result of the poor reception of his previous, family-friendly video game. Alone, he developed and created the story and visuals for the game, and shortly after being released on Steam, it took off as an internet sensation.
Five Nights at Freddy's begins production in February 2023.
