The COVID-19 pandemic has affected nearly all aspects of daily life, but few have been hit as hard as dating. In an era of lockdowns and social distancing, it’s become more challenging than ever for people to come together romantically, which is something a new FMV-based game called Five Dates will let players explore from the safety of their homes.

Wales Interactive, the publisher behind titles like Simulacra and Maid of Sker, announced today that it has partnered with Good Gate Media to produce “a completely live-action, interactive rom-com” that will launch for PC and Mac on November 17. This will be “closely followed” by the release of a console version on PS4, Switch, and Xbox One, it said.

Described as “an exploration of the unpredictable modern dating experience,” Five Dates will have players follow Vinny, a London man trying out a dating app for the first time while in lockdown. Like the title suggests, the interactive romantic comedy will focus around his video dates with five women, with players’ choices deciding whether Vinny is able to hit it off with each date or not. Wales Interactive said the game will feature over 7 hours of filmed footage, as well as 10 different outcomes depending on the choices players make.

Although plenty of games feature options for romancing characters, relatively few games put romance front and center, so it’ll be interesting to see how Five Dates approaches it in these unusual times. “The world needs a dose of warm and funny right now,” Good Gate Media’s John Giwa-Amu said, “and we hope it’ll spark some new ideas for romance for those who play.”

Five Dates will launch on November 17 for PC, with a PS4, Switch, and Xbox One release to follow soon after.
