Sony releases its list of the most downloaded PS4 games for February 2016, revealing that Campo Santo's indie mystery Firewatch has come out on top for the month.

The growth of digital content in video games has opened the door for a new breed of studios to reach huge audiences. One of these studios was Campo Santo, with gamers falling in love with its independent adventure title Firewatch, leading to the game being one of the most anticipated releases of 2016. As it turns out, this promise has lead to a massive number of sales, with Firewatch the most downloaded PS4 game of February 2016.

The news was revealed by Sony, who dropped a list of the most downloaded games over on the official PlayStation blog. The success of Firewatch is hugely impressive, as the title was up against some stiff opposition over the course of the month. In the end, however, Firewatch managed more digital downloads than big hitters such as Far Cry Primal and Street Fighter 5.

Campo Santo will no doubt be extremely happy with its victory in PS4 downloads. The studio spent a long time working on the project, and although critical support was overwhelming for the game's compelling mystery and strong characters, it's important for that to transfer over into strong sales as well. Hopefully, the success of Firewatch will mean that the developer can follow on with another impressive project.

It's no surprise to see the gaming community flock to the title. Firewatch more than delivered on the promise of its dialogue-driven adventure, compelling players with interesting characters and some difficult moral dilemmas. Meanwhile, the game's bittersweet narrative is hardly going to leave the player's mind in a hurry, leading to some deep introspective thought that flies in the face of most video game stories.

Of course, it's more than just the quality of Firewatch that has led to its place at the top of the PS4 download charts. The game's digital-only nature means that any PS4 owner who wanted to play the game would need to download it, whereas other titles on the list may have had their sales split between digital and physical releases. Nonetheless, this is still a major coup for Campo Santo.

That success is unlikely to follow through to March's figures, however. Not only does Firewatch not have a release day boom on its side, but even more highly anticipated game releases are on the cards. In particular, Ubisoft's multiplayer shooter The Division is set for its official release after a hugely succesful beta testing stage. Even so, it feels like Firewatch has made a permanent mark on PS4 gaming.
