PlayStation has officially announced Firewall Ultra for the PlayStation VR2. Developer First Contact Entertainment kicked off its new first-person shooter series in 2018 with the release of Firewall: Zero Hour. The PlayStation VR title offered a tactical shooter experience with unique contractors available to play through various contract missions. Now First Contact Entertainment is ready to deliver the next iteration of the Firewall franchise for the PlayStation's next-gen VR headset.
Firewall Ultra is described by First Contact Entertainment as the "next evolution" of the Firewall series. It, too, will be a first-person multiplayer shooter, but built with the modern features of the PlayStation VR2 headset and the development experience of a previously released major VR release. Since the PlayStation VR2 supports 4K HDR, all of Firewall: Zero Hour's models have been updated visually. Maps have also received a visual overhaul, but will also have new areas introduced.
But Firewall Ultra isn't just an update of Firewall: Zero Hour, it also features a substantial amount of new content and new ideas. Single-player fans will be excited to hear that Firewall Ultra features a new PvE experience, with details to be revealed later. Multiplayer is also being updated substantially. Servers will now be dedicated, rather than peer-to-peer, and matches will be best-of-three format rather than singles. The changes should ensure a much better and more polished experience online.
Expanded content for Firewall Ultra will also be continuing post-launch, to help ensure the game's online player base remains steady well after its initial popularity. Content confirmed to be released post-launch includes new contractors, new maps, and new weapons. There's no word on whether this content will be released as premium DLC or via free updates. Further, there's no word on premium cosmetic DLC, though Firewall will have a "deeper level of customization" than its predecessor.
The announcement of Firewall Ultra adds another exciting release to the lineup planned for the PlayStation VR2. The PlayStation VR2 is tentatively planned to release in early 2023 as a PlayStation 5-exclusive accessory. Firewall Ultra hasn't had its release date confirmed yet either, which could mean it's a launch title or could mean it'll follow later on.
All things considered, Firewall: Zero Hour didn't make a huge splash when it was released for PS VR in 2018. The update and expansion planned for Firewall Ultra could give it the polish necessary to stand out among the growing number of VR games, though. Expect to hear more information regarding Firewall by the end of the year.
