Nintendo announces that the hack-and-slash action game crossover, Fire Emblem Warriors, will release on the Nintendo Switch and the 3DS handheld later this year.

Last week during the Nintendo Switch Treehouse event, Nintendo announced a new game in the Fire Emblem franchise, Fire Emblem Warriors. The game is a crossover between Fire Emblem and Koei Tecmo’s Warriors games. Now, today during a Nintendo Direct focused on only the Fire Emblem franchise, Nintendo showed a new trailer for Fire Emblem Warriors and gave it a release window. The company also revealed that Fire Emblem Warriors will not only be coming to its new Switch console, but it will also be released on the Nintendo 3DS.

While Nintendo was not very specific about a release date, Fire Emblem Warriors has been officially slated to launch sometime in fall of 2017. It appears that both versions of the game, Switch and 3DS, will launch simultaneously. The support on 3DS echoes the words of Nintendo’s leaders who recently said that the Switch is not meant to be a replacement for the 3DS.

Here is the new trailer for Fire Emblem Warriors, featuring new footage not shown during its initial reveal.

Fire Emblems Warriors continues Nintendo’s partnership with Koei Tecmo, who previously made Hyrule Warriors. That game combined the hack-and-slash action of the Dynasty Warriors games with the world and characters of The Legend of Zelda. That game, which originally launched on Wii U, also found its way onto the 3DS as Hyrule Warriors Legends.

Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors Legends were not the biggest successes in terms of critical reception, although those games actually appeared to reinvigorate interest in Koei Tecmo’s own Dynasty Warriors franchise. There were rumors at one point that Nintendo and Koei Tecmo could be pursuing a Warriors spin-off of either the Mario or Pokemon franchises, but it is now clear that Fire Emblem will be the next Nintendo franchise to get the action game makeover.

Fire Emblem Warriors will attempt to hold over Fire Emblem fans in 2017, while Nintendo works on a classic, home console release in the franchise. Nintendo announced that game would be coming next year in 2018 during the same Nintendo Direct. But before Fire Emblem Warriors comes out, Nintendo will also be releasing a Fire Emblem mobile game called Fire Emblem Heroes.

Fire Emblem Warriors is another game in Nintendo’s arsenal to bulk up the games available for its new Nintendo Switch console. However, while there are some anticipated games coming like Super Mario Odyssey, many of those games are scheduled for later in the year or even next year. In fact, only five games have been confirmed for launch.

Fire Emblem Warriors is set to release Fall 2017 on Switch and 3DS.
