Fire Emblem: Three Houses introduced players to the world of Fodlan. With its design choices, such as the calendar system, players got to spend more time conversing with their colleagues and students. This new level of depth, coupled with the Support conversations, breathed new life into Fire Emblem character development.

However, various characters can be fairly single-track minded. Others are outright villains planning awful deeds. The list below separates the most beloved characters of Fodlan as well as those who become detestable. Please be wary of the spoilers below.

10 Love: Dimitri

The scion of the Kingdom of Fareghus, Dimitri carries himself with pride, dignity, and integrity. He truly cares about his people's well-being. Even despite the dark demeanor hidden within his heart, Dimitri is a human being who has felt pain throughout his life.

When Dimitri's demeanor changes during Part 2 of Azure Moon, he becomes hellbent on revenge. With vengeance in mind, Dimitri sets out to retaliate against the Adrestian Empire. When a fatherly figure, Rodrigue, sacrifices himself to save the young lord, Dimitri regains his senses. Trying to settle the past with Edelgard one last time, Dimitri once more believes in goodwill as he attempts to end the Fodlan War.

9 Hate: Cornelia

Beauty only runs skin deep. Her good looks belie her sadistic nature. Cornelia caused the Tragedy of Duscur that took place years before the start of the game.

Allying with the Emperor during the Azure Moon route, she becomes an enemy of Dimitri. Taking pride in her past actions, Cornelia only wants to watch Dimitri suffer. Killing this remorseless sociopath would satisfy any player.

8 Love: Claude

Claude starts off as the miscreant of the Three Houses leaders. With his witty comebacks and constant plotting, Claude might be suspected as up to no good. Only later in the game does he share his true feelings with the player.

Having felt oppression due to being from Almyra, as well as his family's lineage, Claude wants one thing in mind. With his goal to end oppression and treat all of Fodlan's citizens as equals, he enlists Byleth to end the war and take over Fodlan. Even after Archbishop Rhea rescinds her leadership, everyone works together in the ending to make the world a better place with Claude helming the continent.

7 Hate: Thales

Leader of Those Who Slither in the Dark, this cultist wanted to revive Nemesis in order to essentially destroy Fodlan. Sending his minions to infiltrate Garreg Mach, they were behind various murders and massacres. Furthermore, while his underling, Kronya, assassinated Byleth's father, Jeralt, Thales hired her as an assassin to do so, thus being responsible for his murder.

Thales represents another angry old man in the series who wants to destroy the world. The good news is, during Verdant Wind, Byleth finally gets revenge for Jeralt. Prior to the last chapter, the player will confront Thales and effectively end his group once and for all.

6 Love: Hilda

"Hilda! Hilda!" This cheer brings life into a game filled with war and death. Hilda's cheery demeanor will put a smile on anyone's face. Armed with an ax, this young princess reluctantly charges into battle once she can't find someone else to do her work.

Even though she tries to pass her chores off onto others, Hilda exudes undeniable charm. She truly cares about her friends and even goes through great lengths for them. While she seems just lazy at first, in truth, her nature comes from her fear of disappointing others.

5 Hate: Cyril

Players of Three Houses may notice many of the characters are one-track minded. They usually bring up the same thing during their conversations with the professor. In Cyril's case, however, it's Lady Rhea. His lackluster battle prowess hinders him more.

The only thing he can talk about is working hard and pleasing Lady Rhea. This extends both into his conversations with Byleth as well as Support conversations. Among the rest of the house's cast, Cyril quickly grew annoying with both his standoffish demeanor and singing Rhea's praises.

4 Love: Yuri

Leader of the Ashen Wolves beneath Garreg Mach Monastery, the calculating Yuri oversees a colony of outcasts. The Ashen Wolves respect Yuri and live by their own rules. More than anything, Yuri just wants to see his people thrive after being cast out from the church.

While Yuri won't hesitate to resort to devious means in order to achieve his goals, he always fights with conviction. He will gladly ally with Byleth for helping him protect the Abyss. Players who download the DLC can also choose to marry him. As a bonus, he admits that he is quite the chef when you cook with him.

3 Hate: Leonie

Much like Cyril, Leonie suffers from a single obsession. She also quickly becomes confrontational and insecure during support conversations. However, instead of Rhea, she constantly sings Jeralt's praises.

Despite her proficiency in combat, Leonie rarely offers anything positive to the group. Unless the player cares about Jeralt as much as she does, she might be better off benched or not recruited at all.

2 Love: Rhea

Archbishop of Fodlan, motherly Rhea cares about everyone in her continent. Under her rule, Fodlan existed for 995 years without war. The player can feel warm and welcomed anytime they come to lady Rhea.

Rhea hides her wrathful side from her students, however. This comes out once she feels betrayed by an enemy such as during the Crimson Flower route. Moreover, her past indicates dark dealings for a selfish cause. But a woman who longed to see her mother one last time is not a perfect being. Rhea is flawed, yet compassionate, and wants to see her people prosper.

1 Hate: Edelgard

The leader of the Black Eagles house and heir to the throne of Adrestia, Edelgard seems composed and responsible at first. In truth, she reveals herself to be the Flame Emperor. Edelgard not only works with Those Who Slither in the Dark but claims to not condone their actions. In Azure Moon, she betrays Dimitri and causes him to snap.

Edelgard is traitorous and will only choose to bend the continent to her own image. She only brands justice that suits her and will not hesitate to cut down her former allies. Edelgard is only an ally in one route - Crimson Flower - which you can gain by boosting supports and speaking to Edelgard, late in Part I, while exploring the Monastery. Despite only allying with you in one route, however, Edelgard firmly positions herself as the main antagonist of the game. She is the perfect example of a foul and selfish traitor who has cost the continent thousands of lives just to sate her own agenda.
