Set on the continent of Fodlan and more specifically the Garreg Mach Monastery, the player controls Byleth, a former mercenary and the newest professor at the school. Whether they teach the Blue Lions, Golden Deer, or Black Eagles, there are numerous characters to meet.

10 Flayn

Fire Emblem Three Houses Flayn

“Oh my! A new addition to the Officers Academy! I am so very pleased to meet you, Professor. I am Seteth’s little sister, Flayn. I am so happy to make your acquaintance.”

Sweet and polite, Flayn is constantly curious due to being isolated from the other characters in Garreg Mach. She just wants to make friends. Flayn strays from violence and misses her mother.

When Seteth is not looking, she will pursue love with one of the other students. Eventually, he accepts the relationship. However, if Flayn romances Claude, Seteth is kept in the dark.

9 Sothis

Fire Emblem Three Houses Sothis

“Well then, it's up to me to guide you from now on, right?”

Although Sothis looks like a child, she acts like a grandmother. She is always tired and has serious amnesia. Whenever possible, Sothis will give advice to Byleth.

She is quite arrogant though, often speaking down to Byleth whenever they ask a question or say something Sothis finds naive. She needs Byleth, since no one else can see or hear her, yet Sothis takes advantage of them.

8 Thales

Fire Emblem Three Houses Thales

“For thousands of years, we have existed underground, living on only that we might someday see our vengeance realized. Here and now, that vengeance is finally within our grasp.”

The leader of Those Who Slither in the Dark, Thales is evil and manipulative. He absolutely hates Sothis and all who worship her. Thales does not even like the Adrestian Empire, just used them for his own ends...just like his followers (including Kronya).

That being said, he knows what he is doing. Thales is careful when using his sorcery, as to not foil the plan. He even trod lightly around Edelgard. In the end, Thales literally sacrifices himself in attempt to destroy all those around him.

7 Rhea

Fire Emblem Three Houses Rhea

“All I ask is that you guide these open minds with virtue, care, and sincerity.”

On the surface, Rhea the Archbishop is kind-hearted. She helps others and appears passionate about leading the Church of Seiros. That is because Rhea is ruthless and even violent against those who oppose the Goddess.

In fact, the player discovers (via tea time) that she is actually quite lonely. Rhea tells them she has little free time beyond serving the Church (and ruling with an iron fist). With enough buttering up, Rhea even becomes soft with the player (through proper romancing).

6 Jeralt

Fire Emblem Three Houses Jeralt

“In a battle, you should focus on what's important. As mercenaries, we're regularly putting our lives on the line. Getting distracted with unnecessary things will land you in an early grave.”

A former Knight of Seiros and Byleth's father, Jeralt is extremely courageous and highly respected in Garreg Mach. He is modest though. Jeralt loves his family, and dearly misses his late wife Sitri.

The player actually finds out he is a bit of a drunk though, owing money to many taverns across the continent. Also, Jeralt no longer follows the Church of Seiros. He does not even trust Rhea the Archbishop (despite once fighting for the Church).

5 Seteth

Fire Emblem Three Houses Seteth

“Now... You shall be in charge of one of the Officer Academy's three classes. I'm opposed to leaving this up to a youngster whose past we know nothing about, but this is the Archbishop's wish.”

Seteth, like Rhea the Archbishop, has no time for those who oppose the Church of Seiros. He is all about order and discipline, in fact. At first, Seteth does not care for Byleth; eventually though, especially following Flayn's rescue, he warms up to them.

Flayn is the only reason Seteth lives on, following the death of his wife. There is more to him though! Besides offering wise advice to those younger than him, he writes children's books and loves fishing.

4 Dimitri

Fire Emblem Three Houses Dimitri

“Someone must put a stop to this cycle of the strong trampling the weak.”

The leader of the Blue Lions House, Dimitri dislikes formalities and likes telling bad jokes. He is a happy-go-lucky man...on the outside. Underneath, Dimitri harbors darkness and contempt.

He actually suffers from survivor's guilt due to the Tragedy of Duscur. He sees and hears apparitions of the dead. In addition, Dimitri enjoys training but does not care for weak things. Also, he has ageusia (loss of taste).

3 Claude

Fire Emblem Three Houses Claude

“Yet we have the strength to scale the walls between us, to reach out our hands in friendship so we can open our true hearts to one another. That's how we win!”

The leader of the Golden Deer House, Claude is easygoing yet mysterious. He seems lazy and nonchalant, but Claude is actually fairly astute regarding matters at Garreg Mach. Also, he is a master at mind games and a next-level strategist.

However, Claude refuses to kill someone unless necessary. He cares for his comrades greatly and does not care for religion much. Trusting Claude is difficult since he is always scheming and seemingly a step or two ahead of everyone.

2 Edelgard

Fire Emblem Three Houses Edelgard

“People believe Crests are blessings from the Goddess, that they are necessary to maintain order in Fódlan. But the people are wrong. Crests are to blame for this brutal, irrational world we live in.”

The leader of the Black Eagles, Edelgard was born for the role. She is dignified and formal, rarely relaxing, and always tending to her duties. That being said, Edelgard cares deeply for her allies.

Despite being courageous, she is afraid of rats and the ocean. Edelgard also suffers from insomnia and wanders around Garreg Mach after hours to combat the nightmares. She is afraid of her past and remains a private person.

1 Byleth

Fire Emblem Three Houses Byleth

“When I was a mercenary, I rarely got too close to anyone. That all changed when I became a professor.”

Byleth, on the outside and the inside, is emotionless.  In fact, when born, they did not cry or even laugh. However, Byleth becomes attached to their students; each character will bring out Byleth's emotions in some form or another.

On the flip side, they seem trustworthy and the students (and the teachers) confide in them more and more throughout the story. Eventually, Byleth does express emotions, such as happiness as well as sorrow and vengeance. Once holding the nickname "Ashen Demon," they are ruthless on the battlefield...and yet Byleth tries their best to help others.
