Fire Emblem Engage is the newest chapter in a 30-year history of the series. Long-time fans of Fire Emblem games know that each one has its own way of handling how units are promoted, how units are leveled, and what the level cap of each tier can be. In Three Houses, the level cap was level 99 for each unit.

In Three Hopes, it was raised all the way to 120. And looking back at Awakening, each unit had a top level of 30. Fire Emblem Engage however, does away with these types of level caps for a slightly different kind; Engage doesn't use level capping but instead opts for stat capping.

What is the Max Level in Fire Emblem Engage?

Fire-Emblem-Engage-Chapter-22-Walkthrough-01

The maximum level that any class can reach is 20. But while that is technically the level cap, players will be able to use Master Seals in order to move beyond the cap. Without resetting the unit's stats, a Master Seal brings the unit's level down to 1, and they can level past 20 this way. Once a promoted level of 20 has been reached, a character must use a Second Seal to change to the same class to reset down to 1 again. This does not reset the unit's progress, but instead retains their stats and allows the unit to keep growing.

There is an exception, of course; if a Second Seal is used to change from one class to another on the same tier, this may cause some stats to rise and fall based on the stat boosts from the class type. For example, if players change Louis' advanced class from the tankier Great Knight to the more even keeled Paladin, Louis will lose some of his strength, lose Armored, and gain additional resistance and other stats. This isn't from leveling down, however, but more from leveling away from the previous class.

Stat Caps in Fire Emblem Engage

So since a player can continuously move from level 20 to level 1 without losing a single point of their stats, there is a cap on each individual stat. These stats are based on class. Base classes will have far lower stat caps than advanced classes, and special classes like Fire Emblem's Dancer and Thief have their own unique caps as well.

The base classes with a range are based on which character has that starting class; for example, both Fire Emblem Engage's Celine and Alfred both start as base class Noble, but each of their stats have different caps. Also, the special classes of thief, dancer, and Fell Child all have to reach level 40 before a Second Seal can be used on them to reset their class down to 1; this elevated max level and requirement of reaching max level before using a Second Seal is unique to Special Classes only.

Fire-Emblem-Engage-What-Is-Level-Cap-01

A unit's growth in a stat will be completely unique to them; each unit will have a different growth rate in each category. This partly is dependent on the player's luck; a level up is randomized within a stat growth window. However, it is mostly based on a characters' individual stat growth rate. For example, axe-wielder Anna has fast growth in Luck usually while her strength stat will grow far slower. Stat growth per level is also class dependent; for example, an archer's magic stat growth is around 0% per level.

When Should a Unit be Promoted?

fire emblem engage how to change classes

All this is to say that when players choose to use their Master Seals to promote a unit doesn't really matter. While waiting until a base class was level 20 has been massively important in previous Fire Emblem games, Engage's stat caps and easy access to Second Seals make the timing of this move much less important. The only exception to this rule are special classes, which must be their max level of 40 to receive a Second Seal.

Fire Emblem Engage is available now for Nintendo Switch.
