In Fire Emblem Engage, players have about 40 total units to choose from. Most of the end-game maps have players choosing 14 of these units to battle with, so players will need to make sure to have 14 units leveled and ready before the final chapter of Fire Emblem Engage.

To successfully make it through the game on any difficulty, players want to ensure they have great units to take on the challenges ahead. But what is good on Normal difficulty won't necessarily be great for Hard or Maddening, so players will need unique tier lists depending on which difficulty they plan on taking on.

Playing Fire Emblem Engage on its different difficulties is a whole different game, and the tier lists should reflect these massive differences. Normal difficulty is fairly easy in comparison to the other modes, and that means players can basically use any unit with success. Here are the 16 best Engage units for playing on Normal difficulty.

S-Tier Units for Engage on Normal

  • Louis - On Normal difficulty, where there are far fewer enemies with crit weapons and those that deal magic damage, Louis is the best armored unit. His low resistance stat and low speed are completely made up for by the massive amount of defense he gets; while higher difficulty will want more avoidance, Normal playthroughs will most likely value a tank that can take a massive number of hits before falling.
  • Ivy - Ivy is fast and is a powerful magic user. She pairs well with Fire Emblem Engage's Emblem Ring Lyn to boost her staff usage and gain some amazing distance attacks. Her massive speed growth rate, coupled with a fairly large magic growth rate, makes her a great choice for distance attacks and zipping across maps to take out thieves and bosses.
  • Chloe - Chloe begins as a Pegasus unit, but she doesn't have to continue through the game that way. Players can alter her unit type to match more closely with her stat growth rates; her magic and speed numbers make her a great choice to become a hard-hitting martial arts user.
  • Anna - Anna is wonderful for a number of reasons. She makes a powerful warrior, a strong magic user, and her unique skill can help Fire Emblem Engage players farm some gold. This ability to fill in whatever niche players need her for makes her a high-tier unit for Normal level players.
  • Alcryst - In Normal, most of the Lords, Nobles, and other royalty in Fire Emblem Engage have massively helpful skills for players to exploit after they are promoted. Alcryst is one of these; use one of the first Master Seals to level him to his advanced class and watch as units begin to fall from the sky from his attacks.

A-Tier Units for Engage on Normal

  • Clanne - Clanne is one of the most underrated units in Fire Emblem Engage. His best stat is his speed. This unit can level his speed so fast that the enemy unit will take double hits before they even get to attack, making all their stats basically useless.
  • Seadall - Seadall is a dancer that can give other units extra turns, so he's a great choice for any level of Engage player.
  • Alear - Alear has the ability to become a useful unit in any build with any class they are capable of changing to. It's a good thing, too, since players cannot battle without them.
  • Panette - Once changed to a warrior instead of the worse berserker class, Panette smashes enemies like a hero. Unfortunately for her, she comes in a little bit too late to the action, showing up almost halfway through the game.
  • Jean - Jean is a unit that is amazing at keeping both himself and his teammates alive. Coupled with his Expertise, players will have a great dedicated healer that can also level stats elsewhere.
  • Diamant - Diamant is quite the tank; he can do massive damage to everything on the board with his amazing starting stats, great growth rates, and is one of the best axe users on Normal.
  • Celine - Another powerful magic user, Celine is perfect for matching up with Celica to move across large pieces of the map and smash enemies in the face with some spells. Her magic growth is fantastic, and while she is much better early game than late game, Celine is still a powerful force at the end of Fire Emblem Engage.

B-Tier Units for Engage on Normal

Yunaka in Fire Emblem Engage
  • Yunaka - In Fire Emblem Engage, the thief is a special class, so Yunaka won't be able to change her class. However, it's so easy to boost her avoidance up to 100% that players will want her to move into enemy groups and draw their hits.
  • Etie - Ranged characters are excellent backup for picking off low-health enemies that other characters might leave behind. Etie, coupled with a long-range bow, makes for a great sniper to pick off flying units from a distance as well.
  • Alfred - A great mounted unit with some strong starting stats and growth rates.
  • Veyle - Veyle would be far higher on the list if it weren't for how late she comes into the game. But for a unit that doesn't join the group until Fire Emblem Engage's chapter 22, she is incredibly powerful as both a Fell Child and a Thief.

Unit Tier List For Fire Emblem Engage on Hard and Maddening

The raised difficulty of both Maddening and Hard modes in Fire Emblem Engage means that enemies will be significantly more dangerous. In order to ensure the survival of units, especially if playing on Classic mode where death is permanent, players will need to use and level the best possible units. This means that many of the units that were S-tier before will no longer appear on this list at all.

S-Tier Units for Engage on Maddening

  • Zelkov - Zelkov is a great choice over even Yunaka, mostly because his speed begins so much higher than Yunaka's could ever be. To match his stats, players would need to dump so much XP into her that it would no longer make sense. And overall, Zelkov's growth rates make him a great choice to take over the Thief slot when players get him in Fire Emblem Engage's Chapter 11.
  • Seadall - As a Dancer, Seadall is an S-tier unit for any Hard or Maddening mode list.
  • Chloe - The new unit in Fire Emblem Engage called Chloe is one of the first units players will get in Fire Emblem Engage, and she is massively overpowered in certain ways. She will carry players' early game by moving fast and trashing opponent's units. In late-game, she can be given a Master Seal and Second Seal to change her to a martial master; her amazing strength and magic growth rates make her much better with fists than she could ever be as a mounted unit.
  • Alear - There are a handful of builds that allow Alear to solo most maps, even on the hardest difficulties. It's great that they are such a great unit since players don't have a choice on whether to use them or not.
  • Jean - Jean's passive makes his growth rates absolutely massive no matter what class he ends up in. He's a wonderful healer, a decent martial artist, and can fill in other roles in the lower two difficulties as well.
  • Hortensia - Although not super useful in the lower difficulties, the use of staffs is necessary in harder difficulties. Hortensia is a flying unit and is the best staff user players can get; her passive allows her to use staffs without using up one of the staff's charges on occasion. Considering several staffs are limited in Fire Emblem Engage, players will want to save all the charges they can.
  • Anna - While Anna makes for a great warrior in Normal, she is mostly used as a sage in higher difficulties. This is because her magic stat growth rate is absolutely bonkers.
  • Kagetsu - This unit has massive speed numbers, allowing him to follow up without ever taking a single blow from enemies. Speed is king in Maddening, and Kagetsu is the king of speed.

A-Tier Units for Engage on Maddening

Fire Emblem Engage Citrinne Alcryst
  • Alcyrst - A prince from the Brodia nation of Fire Emblem Engage, Alcryst is still a pretty solid unit on higher difficulties. He is a great-ranged unit with a solid promotion. He's worth using to pick off remaining enemies from a safe distance.
  • Celine - While she doesn't have the magic growth rate of some other units, Celine is still a great choice for a Tome wielder, especially in early game.
  • Yunaka - Yunaka will never be as strong as Zelkov, but players will want to use her, at least until he makes his debut. It is pretty easy to get her up to 100% dodge rate, meaning she can tank, becoming the first line of defense against any adversary without the danger of dying.

B-Tier Units for Engage on Maddening

Alfred S-support in Fire Emblem Engage
  • Alfred - Having at least one mounted Fire Emblem unit on the team can be beneficial, and Alfred is the best of these in the game.
  • Amber - Amber is also a solid-mounted unit; his growth rates are pretty good, and he makes for a great filler in any group.
  • Panette - Panette, who joins the party in Chapter 13 of Fire Emblem Engage, is still pretty strong, just as long as players avoid her berserker profession. Berserkers just aren't very good in Fire Emblem Engage, and her strength stat makes her a much better warrior anyway.

Fire Emblem Engage is available now for Nintendo Switch.
