Nintendo has released a new trailer for Fire Emblem Engage detailing the Nintendo Switch-exclusive RPG's home base, the Somniel. To prevent the resurrection of the Fell Dragon, Fire Emblem Engage players will need to unite four nations and gather the mysterious and powerful Emblems. It's going to take a base of operations to do so, and luckily the Somniel waits for the Divine Dragon's use. That it's a cool floating sky island packed full of everything the Divine Dragon needs is just a happy coincidence.
Fire Emblem Engage is about a thousand-year-old force of evil returning. Lythos, the holy land ruled by the Divine Dragon, united the four nations of Brodia, Elusia, Firene, and Solm to defeat the Fell Dragon. Now it's coming back, and the Divine Dragon is also returning after a thousand years of sleep to ensure the safety of the world of Elyos. That's hopefully enough background to explain why the player, in the role of the Divine Dragon, is in need of a sky island base and all the tools it provides.
The first section of the new Fire Emblem Engage trailer focuses on how Somniel is used in preparation for battle. In Somniel's plaza, players will find both the armory and item shop, where players can purchase gear and consumables before combat. Next is the Ring Chamber, which holds what's called Emblems. These are connections to Fire Emblem characters from different worlds and play a key role in progression. Lastly, there's the Arena and Tower of Trials, where players can do test battles or compete for bonus rewards.
Next in the trailer is getting to know Fire Emblem Engage's allies. Spread across Somniel, players will find visiting NPCs met in the Divine Dragon's quest, as well as members of their army. Each one can be conversed with, and have bonds grown between them and the Divine Dragon. Gifts are also hidden across the island, which can be shared with NPCs for bond progression. In Cafe Terrace, players can order food to provide extra stats, and have some fun interactions.
The last section of the trailer focuses on "Everything Else," covering other random activities that Fire Emblem Engage players can participate in. For example, there's a Farmyard where animals can be interacted with, a mysterious creature named Somnie that can be fed for rewards, a Boutique for cosmetic gear, Fishing, a Fortune Teller, and much more.
While battles are still the heart of the Fire Emblem Engage experience, much like other titles in the series, Nintendo wants to make clear that there's plenty to do between battles, too. Fire Emblem games have been working to expand hubs like the Somniel for some time and Fire Emblem Engage looks to have the most robust home base yet. It does stand in contrast of the more mature storytelling of the game, to some degree, but there's no arguing that it's been a popular feature.
