In the most recent Nintendo Live, a new Fire Emblem title was finally revealed, much to fans' excitement. The series has come a long way, starting with the earliest Fire Emblem title, Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light in 1990, to the 17th installment in the game, Fire Emblem Engage, which is planned to release in early 2023.

From what was seen in the trailer, the story will follow the main protagonist, Alear – a red and blue-haired man or woman, who will obtain the ability to summon Fire Emblem heroes from older games with the use of rings called Emblems. With that, the fight against the Fell Dragon to protect the land of Elyos begins.

6 Fusion system

Alear and Marth (1)

Fusion system, which will probably be referred to as Engage system, is a way to fuse a character with a summoned hero, thanks to the Emblem Ring. This is a brand-new, never seen before feature in Fire Emblem games. This was first showcased in the trailer, where the protagonist, Alear, fuses with the Hero King Marth to form a unique character.

This system seems to work in a way where any unit can be given a ring, and, after some conditions are fulfilled, the fusion can be activated and used to give a boost of power for one turn.

5 Old Heroes Summoning

So far, the most interesting aspect revealed so far in Fire Emblem Engage is, without a doubt, the ability to summon heroes from other Fire Emblem titles. So far, only 12 have been confirmed, thanks to the beginning of the trailer. On an art wheel, these heroes are seen: Marth, Sigurd, Lyn, Celica, Leif, Chrom, Lucina, Ike, Corrin, Eirika, Micaiah, and Byleth.

These characters Span over 11 Fire Emblem games. Notably, Fire Emblem: Awakening gets two entries in the game, Chrom and Lucina, while all the others get one. It's possible that more characters will be added when the DLC is released.

4 Weapon Triangle Return

The weapon triangle is a classic feature in almost every Fire Emblem title, however, this was mostly taken out in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, with what's remaining of it being some techniques like Sword Breaker. This feature ensures diversity on the battlefield, as every weapon has an advantage and disadvantage – Sword beats Ax, Ax beats Lance, and Lance beats Sword, like a game of rock, paper, scissors.

Upon closer inspection of the recent trailer for Fire Emblem Engage, it is clear that the weapon triangle has made its comeback due to the weapon forecast showcasing it.

3 Large Area To Explore

In the trailer, Alear was seen in a bunch of different areas and fans were able to get a decent glimpse at what can be explored in this newest game. A lot of the more recent Fire Emblem games started including explorable areas compared to older titles, with the likes of the Garreg Mach Monastery in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, or the Astral Plane in Fire Emblem: Fates, being prime examples.

In Fire Emblem Engage, this includes areas like a castle, where both the exterior and interior are briefly shown in the trailer, as well as a spot that looks like a shopping street. The trailer also showed what looks like a forger and a farm-like spot, with animals. This place seems like it's going to be the main base in between chapters.

2 Sword-Wielding Main Character

Alear

Alear is the name of the protagonist of this game and the one shown in the trailer was the male version, however, the player can choose the gender and go with female Alear, who is similar to her male counterpart. Not much is known about this character besides the fact that they have been asleep for a thousand years and is of the divine Dragon race. They are a red and blue-haired and eyed, swordfighter, as are most Fire Emblem Lords, with a few exceptions, such as Sigurd and Micaiah.

To be specific, the weapon that Alear uses in the trailer is a sword called Liberation. It is possible this sword is very important and story relevant. When Alear fused with Marth, however, the weapon used was a sword named Mercurios. It seems possible that fusions grant temporary weapons like the one seen in the trailer.

1 A Whole New Cast Of Characters

Despite Fire Emblem Engage bringing back older heroes from other Fire Emblem titles, it doesn't seem to be lacking when it comes to unique new characters. As the trailer begins, a lot of characters get a few seconds to showcase their abilities, but most go unnamed for now.

As for the named characters, fans get to see Vander, who seems to be this installment's Jagen archetype – a veteran cavalry soldier. Following him, fans see a multitude of characters, to be specific, Etie, an Archer, Framme, who is a female Brawler, Louis, a heavy-armored unit, and finally Chole, a blue-haired Pegasus rider. In addition to these, two characters were seen performing a fusion besides Alear. These were Celine, a blonde-haired mage, fusing with Celica, and Alfred, a Cavalry, fusing with Sigurd.

Fire Emblem Engage will be released on January 20, 2023 on the Nintendo Switch.
