Table of contents

Fire Emblem Engage has an impressive 69 classes for players to assign to their units. 18 of these classes are exclusive to specific characters and situations, but every single character in the game can use the other 51. This gives players many options when it comes to creating a team, but switching classes takes a bit more than pressing a button. Each class has certain requirements that must be met before a character can switch to that class, and specific items are needed to make the switch as well.

The tradition of switching classes is an old one for Fire Emblem games, and Fire Emblem Engage expands on that even more by removing certain barriers present in older games. As mentioned, any character can use any of the non-exclusive classes so long as they meet the prerequisites.

Fire Emblem Engage - Class Change Prerequisites

In order to change into a new class, players must meet both a level requirement and a weapon proficiency requirement. For Base Classes, there is no level requirement, but the weapon proficiency requirement must still be met. For Advanced Classes, players must reach level 10 in a specific base class and be proficient in one or more of the weapons used by that class. In order to gain proficiencies in new weapons, players will need to spend Bond Fragments to increase their bond with certain Emblems. Check the Ring Reference to see what Emblems provide which weapon proficiencies.

Fire Emblem Engage - Master Seals and Second Seals

Assuming players meet all the prerequisites, they will also need a Seal to change classes. Players trying to upgrade from a Base Class to an Advanced Class need to use a Master Seal. By contrast, Second Seals are used when a character wants to switch from a Base Class to another Base Class or from an Advanced Class to another Advanced Class.

Regardless, the prerequisites for the new class must still be met. Both Master Seals and Second Seals can be earned from completing certain chapters, or they can be purchased from the Item Shop in Somniel, the player's home base, for 2500 Gold.

Aside from changing classes, Seals also reset the player's class level to one. This is important because the player's stats remain the same. This means that even after a player has maxed out a class, they can use a Second Seal to go back to level 1 and continue leveling up and increasing their stats. This is a recurring element that Fire Emblem veterans are familiar with, but that may seem strange to new players.
