Fire Emblem Engage is the most recent addition to the roster of Fire Emblem games, with its recent release on January 20, 2023. This game is characterized by its unit battle mechanic which works with what’s called Emblem Rings. When synced with a character, a ring can grant bonuses and skills to a character that can change the tide of battle.

Alear, as the main character of this game, is a very flexible character that wouldn’t necessarily work badly with any of the Emblem Rings. However, some work better than others when equipped.

8 Ike

Ike is the Emblem of Radiance and hails from the game Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, where he is the main character.

One stat Alear might fall behind in is Strength, and Ike can act as a good patch for that. Ike’s engage skill Laguz Friend sets avoidance to zero but makes the unit take 50% less damage which, might be a small issue as Alear is more of a dodging unit than a tank one, but the Engage Attack Great Aether makes up for it as it allows Alear to hurt enemies in a 2-space-sized area.

7 Eirika

Eirika and Ephraim Fire Emblem Engage

Eirika, the Emblem of the Sacred, is an important character from the game Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. Her Emblem Ring includes her twin brother, Ephraim, as they fight together to help the synched unit.

Eirika, as an Emblem Ring, grants units great bonuses over the board. This can be useful if Alear falls behind when it comes to their stat growth as Erika can come in clutch to fix this, thanks to skills like Lunar Brace. Other skills such as Solar Brace can help Alear recover HP while attacking or Gentility, which confers less damage taken to the unit. The Engage attack, Twin Strikes, is extra powerful when used by Alear as it has a +20% damage when used by someone from a Dragon class.

6 Byleth

Byleth is the Emblem of the Academy and is originally the main character from the game Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

As an Emblem Ring, Byleth is an extremely good choice for a support unit. If, by bad luck, Alear’s growth stats don’t go as well as the player would’ve wanted them to, Byleth is always a good option to still make Alear useful with the Engage Attack ability - Goddess Dance which grants 4 adjacent units an additional turn.

5 Lyn

Lyn is the Emblem of Blazing that’s originally one of the three main characters from the game Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade.

Lyn is the ring to go for if the player wants to give a speed boost to Alear. With skills like Speedtaker that grant speed boosts to the unit after initiating combat and defeating a foe, and other skills like Alacrity that allow the unit to attack twice before the foe can counterattack, Lyn can benefit Alear greatly as they’re already a speed-based unit.

4 Lucina

Emblem Lucina appearing in Engage

Lucina is the Emblem of Awakening and rises from the game Fire Emblem: Awakening, like the most recent DLC addition, Chrom and Robin.

Lucina is an Emblem the player gets not long after losing Marth in Engage. In many ways, she’s very similar to the Hero King. Her best skill is Bonded Shield, which protects 4 adjacent allies with a rate of 80% success on average. Her Engage attack, All for One, allows all allies within 2 squares to assist in the attack.

3 Corrin

Corrin

The Emblem of Fates, Corrin, is a kind and caring character from the game Fire Emblem: Fates - now joined by her sister in the second wave DLC, Camilla.

Corrin is the ideal unit if the player wants Alear to inflict stat debuffs on the enemies, with skills like Draconic Hex and Dreadful Aura. Her ability, Dragon Vein, is perfect for Alear as they’re one of the few characters who can use it to its full potential, as long as they stay in the Dragon class type.

2 Marth

fire emblem protagonist and marth

The first Emblem the player acquires, the Emblem of Beginnings, is none other than Fire Emblem’s very first protagonist, Marth, originally from the game Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light.

Marth is Alear’s canon ideal ring. He compliments Alear’s swift sword attacks perfectly and his skills, such as Perceptive, make Alear a dodge master. Divine Speed is an attack that allows an extra attack at 50% damage and the Engage Attack Lodestar Rush is a destructive follow-up of 7 consecutive attacks.

1 House Leaders

Perhaps the best choice for Alear might be one of the DLC bracelets. The first one the player gets out of them is the Emblem of Rivals, containing three characters, Dimitri, Edelgard, and Claude, from the game Three Houses.

The bracelet is simply very powerful. It comes with many abilities, the most interesting being the Combat Arts, with abilities like Raging Storm that give the unit an extra turn, or Atrocity, that’s almost guaranteed to kill an enemy. The Engage attack Houses Unite uses all weapons of the House Leaders and is sure to land a heavy blow on any enemy.

Fire Emblem Engage is available now for Nintendo Switch.
