A new Fire Emblem game is making its way to the Switch in the form of Fire Emblem Engage, a standalone series entry. Players can stop looking for games to play if they liked Fire Emblem and eagerly await the brand new, official title.

Ever since Fire Emblem: Three Houses took over players' attention in a big way, the next Fire Emblem mainline entry has been eagerly anticipated, and Fire Emblem Engage does not look to disappoint. Its reveal trailer offers a lot to sift through in all respects, including gameplay, lore, and beautifully animated scenes.

The trailer opens with a little backstory about the world that Fire Emblem Engage takes place in. It's fairly standard, with a sacred land attacked by a Dark (Fel) Dragon, pushed back by heroes. However, these heroes were summoned from other worlds, and seem to be heroes from other Fire Emblem games. The hero of this particular game is apparently a Divine Dragon in human form, and has hair and eyes that are a vibrant blue and red mix. While certainly distinct, and a good entry in a series known for its good character design, it's also undeniable that the main character has the same color scheme as a Nintendo Switch.

Said main character must embark on a journey to stop the revival of the Fel Dragon while battling foes in true Fire Emblem fashion. The turn based grid combat does not seem much different from the norm, but there is one particularly interesting addition. Some characters have rings that let them summon heroes from other Fire Emblem titles, and it looks like they assist in combat. This could prove a significant edition to Fire Emblem's already great job system.

There also seems to be a hub area where characters can shop, change clothes, and do other activities. This may be a carry-over similar to the academy from Fire Emblem Three Houses, a good carry over feature from a previous Fire Emblem title. Of course, the academy was not perfect, so this would also be a good time to solidify what worked and remove what didn't.

As of this article it is unknown how much influence heroes from other Fire Emblem games will have over the story. They may feature as characters in their own right, playable characters in future DLC, or possibly just be combat features.

Fire Emblem Engage is coming to the Nintendo Switch on January 20, 2023.
