Celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the critically acclaimed PlayStation 2 title Final Fantasy X, Square Enix announced at this year’s Tokyo Game Show that they will re-release their mega-hit remastered in HD on the PlayStation 3 and the PS Vita.
For those who have not played Final Fantasy X, the story revolves around a fictional world of Spira. The hero, Tidus, a renowned blitzball player (an underwater rugby/soccer like game), is taken to the world of Spira by an enormous creature named Sin. Tidus must now figure out a way to get back home. The only problem is, when he arrives in Spira, he is told that his homeland of Zanarkand was destroyed 1,000 years ago. With a ragtag group of friends, Tidus must seek out the truth about his arrival at Spira, his mysterious father, and how they are all linked to Sin.
While Final Fantasy X proved to be a great success 10 years ago, many Final Fanboys/girls are still latched onto Final Fantasy VII as being the biggest hit of the series franchise. As Square Enix CEO, Yoichi Wada, recently admitted that the ‘Final Fantasy’ brand has been hurt, one would question the motives of this remake – when they could be remaking FFVII or figuring out how they could redeem themselves with Final Fantasy XV or the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII-2.
Details on this re-release are very scarce other than the fact that it will arrive in hi-def, but you may ask, what could they do to improve the game? It is already a very beautifully animated title and the gameplay was pretty fluid as well. A few touch ups here and there could be nice, but is it really necessary? My biggest complaint about the game is that the last boss was really, really weak, but the story and the characters were a very enjoyable group to adventure with.
How do you feel about Square Enix’s decision making process with this re-release along with the sequel to a less than warm welcomed FFXIII? Also, let’s hear your favorite Final Fantasy X memories and what Square Enix could do to improve the game with this re-release.
