Although most Final Fantasy 7 fans are desperately waiting for a substantial update on the game's upcoming episodic remake, that isn't the only special treatment the 22 year old game is getting in the near future. The classic franchise installment is also coming to a Nintendo console for the first time, in the form of one of the recent PC ports.

Although playing a port from a few years ago obviously isn't as exciting as playing a brand new remake, Final Fantasy 7 on the Nintendo Switch is still a big deal. The portable nature of the console has made it a perfect choice for RPGs and, despite doubts about the hardware's power, it can clearly handle a port like this. There is still one big question looming around the release though: When will it arrive?

The original reveal of Final Fantasy 7 for Nintendo Switch offered a vague "2019" release window. Nintendo still doesn't seem ready to commit to a firm date, but the new trailer for FF7 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has a description that explains, "Buy Mario Kart 8 Deluxe now. Final Fantasy VII coming soon!"

Now, "coming soon" obviously isn't a firm that either, but it's reassuring to see that the company is actively promoting the game. Hopefully this means that the launch is going to be sooner than later and will offer Switch players a crack at the game in the first half of 2019. We'll continue keeping an eye out for the official release date, so be sure to check back frequently for updates and more Final Fantasy news.

Final Fantasy 7 for Nintendo Switch is expected sometime in 2019.
