Fans have been delighted with many amazing stories over the years, but some of the best tales that Square Enix has given the fandom aren't without their heartbreak. The franchise has seen its fair share of character deaths, so check out these saddest deaths from one of the best gaming series out there. Naturally, there are spoilers ahead.

10 Tellah (Final Fantasy 4)

Tellah is one of the playable characters of Final Fantasy 4 and is known as the Great Sage of Mysidia. His character is tragic even before he meets his demise, already a widower, the poor guy then witnesses his daughter dying during a bomb raid and he vows to kill the man responsible, Golbez.

When Tellah regains his memory, he remembers how to cast meteor and uses it to try and defeat Golbez, knowing that the powerful magic will cost him his life. Regrettably, meteor doesn't kill Golbez, though it does cause him to lose control over Kain. Tellah uses his dying breath to ask his comrades to avenge his daughter on his behalf.

9 Class Zero (Final Fantasy Type-0)

Final Fantasy Type-0 was particularly ruthless in its standard ending for the game, not only killing off one or two characters but the full 12 members of Class Zero. Though the courageous students managed to save the world, it was ultimately at the cost of losing their phantoms, essentially their souls.

The tearjerking final moments of the class are them huddled together as they discuss all the things they wanted to do once the war was over. There is an alternate ending that saves Class Zero from this fate.

8 Biggs, Wedge and Jessie (Final Fantasy 7)

This entry might be a little controversial, as essentially Biggs, Wedge and Jessie as members of Avalanche are terrorists in Final Fantasy 7, who admit that they have caused the deaths of innocents by their actions. When Shinra attacks Sector 7 and drops the plate, these three characters try to defend the town and die in doing so.

There are some rather touching moments, such as when Wedge has fallen from the pillar and lies dying but is simply happy that Cloud remembers him. Additionally, Jessie is able to speak to Cloud in her final moments and concludes that this is their punishment for taking innocent lives. Interestingly, in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Biggs is shown to survive, fans are led to believe Wedge survives, and only Jessie's death is actually confirmed.

7 Galuf Halm Baldesion (Final Fantasy 5)

Galuf is one of the characters of Final Fantasy 5, he is one of the few times where the franchise utilizes an older character as a playable party member. His death was particularly hard to bear because Galuf is able to overcome Exdeath with the love for his granddaughter, Krile, who is in danger, and it seems to work causing Exdeath to run away.

However, after Exdeath flees, Galuf collapses and there is a tearjerking scene where Krile is begging him to stay alive but Galuf regrettably passes away.

6 Tidus (Final Fantasy 10)

Tidus is the protagonist of Final Fantasy 10 who accompanies Yuna on her pilgrimage to save the world from Sin. Yuna and Tidus begin to develop feelings for one another, which makes it all the more heartbreaking when it is revealed that Tidus is just a dream of the Fayth.

This means that when Yuna sends Auron and the aeons to the Farplane, causing the Fayth to depart, Tidus too vanishes from existence. There is a particularly sad scene at the end of the game where Tidus begins to lose his corporeality and Yuna tries to hug him and instead falls through him. Fortunately for fans, in Final Fantasy 10-2, there is a way for Tidus to be revived from the Farplane.

5 Lunafreya Nox Fleuret (Final Fantasy 15)

The heroine of Final Fantasy 15, Lunafreya regrettably didn't get used as much as fans would have liked. Rather than being the damsel in distress that the hero has to save, it is Lunafreya who helps Noctis in his quest instead.

Though already wounded by Arydn, Lunafreya uses the last of her strength to protect Noctis from Leviathan's tidal wave. As Noctis lies unconscious, Lunafreya bids him a tearjerking farewell in the dreamworld before she disappears forever. Her body then disperses into light before Ignis and Ravus, while Noctis remains unconscious.

4 Serah Farron (Final Fantasy 13-2)

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Serah and Mog

Though Serah also appeared in Final Fantasy 13, it wasn't until Final Fantasy 13-2 that she not only became the main protagonist but also met her untimely demise. In this game, Serah and her companion Noel travel through time to fix paradoxes and restore the proper timeline to what it should be.

During the story, it is revealed that Serah has a gift from the Goddess Etro that makes her a seeress who can see visions and change the timeline, the same as Yule. However, this gift comes with a curse that it will ultimately kill her. In the game's closing moments, as the characters celebrate restoring the timeline, Serah falls into Noel's arms and dies.

3 Aerith Gainsborough (Final Fantasy 7)

Arguably the most well-known death out of the entire Final Fantasy franchise, Aerith's death has stayed with players since the game's first release for the PlayStation. Recently, long-time fans had to relive the trauma with the release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Much to the dismay of players, Aerith is cut down by Sephiroth in front of Cloud's eyes, impaling her with Masamune while she is praying at an altar. Aerith collapses into Cloud's arms in a touching moment that is hard to forget.

2 Vivi Ornitier (Final Fantasy 9)

Vivi is one of the playable characters in Final Fantasy 9 and is arguably the most memorable. Final Fantasy 9 dealt with some rather deep issues about existence and what it means to be alive. Players saw first-hand the existential crisis that Vivi went through as he discovered that he was manufactured and had a finite lifespan of a year.

Players couldn't help but hope that somehow Vivi wouldn't have this restricted existence, but during monologue read by Vivi at the game's ending, it is clear that he finally stopped working as he says farewell to his friends.

1 Haurchefant Greystone (Final Fantasy 14)

Square Enix's MMORPG Final Fantasy 14 has suffered a few character casualties during its time, but none hit fans harder than the loss of Haurchefant. As one of the main characters to welcome players to Ishgard during the Heavensward events, Haurchefant was immediately likable and he continued to help the Warrior of Light during their adventures.

As the truth behind the Dragonsong War is unraveled and the characters seek to bring Archbishop Thordan VII to justice, the Warrior of Light is thrown into harm's way when a bolt of light flies at them. Nobly, Haurchefant attempts to block the hit with his shield, only for it to crash through his shield and his body, killing him.
