The Final Fantasy series is home to some of the greatest video game characters in the history of gaming. Each entry follows an unlikely group that goes on a quest to defeat a terrifying evil, but not all entries feature the same story structure. The path to the finish line is unique to the title it appears in, as are the game's leading characters.

Though some Final Fantasy characters can be compared to others quite easily, the vast majority are unique. The series is chock-full of endearing and compelling protagonists, some of whom prove to be exceptionally wholesome additions. While not all characters are designed to be wholesome, the ones who are tend to be extremely memorable.

5 Relm (Final Fantasy 6)

Relm is one of the most wholesome characters in the Final Fantasy series, mainly because of her age and inexperience. While most of Final Fantasy 6's main protagonists have clear-cut motivations and goals, Relm seems to only want to go on an adventure with her grandfather, Strago.

In a world on the brink of destruction, Relm serves to be a subtle beacon of hope. Not only is she the source of some of the game's most wholesome moments, but she also proves to be a capable combatant thanks to her ability to use her paintbrush as a weapon. Her fighting style makes her deserving of her spot in the party, but the levity she brings to Final Fantasy 6's more serious moments all but solidifies her position. Even when humanity's fate is uncertain, Relm is content with spending time with her grandfather, or simply by caring for Shadow's dog, Interceptor.

4 Yuna (Final Fantasy 10)

Yuna emerging from Besaid Temple in Final Fantasy 10

While Rikku contributes a few wholesome moments throughout the story of Final Fantasy 10, Yuna is by far the most wholesome character in the game. First introduced when Tidus completes the Besaid Cloister of Trials, she quickly proves to be endearing addition to the party. She is arguably the strongest main character in the game, thanks to her summoning abilities, but she also manages to be one of the most sincere party members Tidus meets on his adventure.

Like her father Braska, Yuna intends to defeat Sin, a gargantuan monster capable of mass destruction. To do this, she must travel from her home to Zanarkand, to obtain the power necessary to destroy it. Her path is riddled with loss and heartbreak, but she always manages to retain a smile, no matter how beak her journey becomes. She even allows herself to fall in love, which further showcases how wholesome of a character she can be, especially during her and Tidus' awkward conversations. Final Fantasy 10 is bursting with wholesome moments, and Yuna is the source of the majority of them.

3 Prompto (Final Fantasy 15)

Prompto Final Fantasy 15

Final Fantasy 15 documents the lives of four best friends on a journey to reclaim their home. When the Niflheim Empire takes control of the city of Insomnia, the group sets out to reclaim it by any means they can. Each member of the party has a unique goal and personality, and while most of them are interesting, none are as compelling as Prompto's. Prompto is Noctis' closest friend, and though the quest he embarks on is wrought with hardship, he rarely lets it get him down.

Prompto appears even more wholesome because of how cold Noctis can be. He is Final Fantasy 15's primary source of comic relief but ends up being so much more than that as the narrative progresses. When he's not tearing Daemons apart with his firearm, he will more than likely be found snapping a few pictures while spouting some charming quips. Upon learning of how he came to be, Prompto becomes a disillusioned version of himself, who finds it difficult to accept who he is. This shift in personality further highlights exactly how wholesome he is, while also revealing the pain he tries to conceal with humor.

2 Aerith (Final Fantasy 7)

Aerith Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Aerith is arguably one of the most iconic characters in Final Fantasy history. Introduced in Final Fantasy 7, she quickly became a beloved character because of how she differed from the somewhat more serious cast. Though she eventually comes to share the same goal as Cloud, Barret, and Tifa, her first appearance paints her as a carefree young woman with an extremely wholesome personality.

Aerith is already a wholesome individual, but her first meeting with Cloud serves to elevate how wholesome she can be. When compared to Cloud's brutish and cold demeanor, she seems like a breath of fresh air. Most characters who encounter Cloud are immediately intimidated by his harsh personality, but Aerith sees straight through it. Any moment Aerith is onscreen offers the player a brief moment of respite from the serious story, which proves to be a huge benefit considering how high the stakes are. Without Aerith, Final Fantasy 7 would be lacking in a great deal of what makes it so wholesome.

1 Vivi (Final Fantasy 9)

Final Fantasy 9 Vivi

Vivi, the iconic black mage, is arguably the most wholesome character in Final Fantasy 9. After arriving in Alexandria and sneaking his way into Queen Brahme's castle, he encounters Zidane, a young thief who poses as a performer to infiltrate Alexandria and kidnap Princess Garnet. Though Vivi led a relatively simple life before this meeting, he soon finds himself wrapped up in a seriously dangerous adventure.

On his journey, Vivi slowly unearths how he came to be, and what life has in store for him. He was manufactured to be a weapon but fell from a cargo ship before he could fulfill the purpose he was designed for. Upon learning this, he struggles to accept what his destiny is, but Zidane makes sure to help him through the process. When he reaches the Black Mage Village, he learns that the black mages usually only live for one year. Even while knowing this, he refuses to leave Zidane's side and instead follows him until the end of the story. As if this wasn't wholesome enough, Kingdom Hearts 2 gave him one of the most adorable voices any Final Fantasy character has ever had.
