Throughout the many years that Final Fantasy has been a series, fans have been locked in never-ending debates over who the most powerful character in the franchise is. With each new entry, forums everywhere are lined with tags asking, "Who would win in a fight?" all while defending their favorites to the very end.

While games such as Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT and Kingdom Hearts have given us a look at how certain characters fare in a fight with others outside of their storylines, we can't help but imagine how these powerful heroes and villains would do against each other if given the opportunity. These are 10 Final Fantasy versus match-ups we would love to see.

10 Cloud vs. Jecht

In all honesty, these two don't have much to do with each other. The only thing they have in common is that they are both pretty tough dudes and they both fight using large swords. Although Dissidia: Final Fantasy has technically given us a chance to see how these two would battle it out, the real charm of this idea spawns from the thought of seeing a fully animated clash between these powerhouses. With Jecht being the basic form of the main antagonist in Final Fantasy X  and with that form going down relatively easy when compared to the likes of Sin, it makes for a much more even fight with Cloud. We can only imagine how Cloud would handle Sin himself.

9 Zidane vs. Terra

Zidane Tribal from Final Fantasy 9

Zidane and Terra aren't two characters every fan dreams of seeing in action when they are on their own, but one circumstance has been in debate for years and it is the fight being Esper Terra and Trance Zidane. Trance is a form of "limit break" that is shown across the series that buffs the party members' stats and changes their appearance. When Terra from Final Fantasy VI enters her trance, she transforms into an esper, unlocking great psychic potential and dramatically increasing her power.

In Final Fantasy IX, trance is caused by a surge of emotion. This causes Zidane to use special "dyne" abilities and also changes his appearance in an allusion to Terra's look. What makes fans lean slightly towards team Terra is the fact that she can fly, while Zidane can only move by foot, however quickly. With how similar Square Enix made these two in this regard, we would certainly be thrilled to watch a battle between this intense pair.

8 Noctis vs. Lightning

Agility? Check. Strength? Check. Defeated the creator of the universe? Well, no, that's just Lightning. Noctis did, however, defeat some demigods. While both of these heroes have clear weaknesses, they both accomplish incredible feats thanks to the fates they were given. When it comes down to pure skill, this is a match-up that would need to be seen. One can only hope that Lightning keeps up with Noctis' phase shifting.

7 Yuna vs. Rydia

Rydia from Final Fantasy 6

One area of the Final Fantasy franchise that is often left out of debates is the strength between the series' fantastic summoners. Yuna's dedication to training is incredible, no one can argue with that.

For that reason, most fans lean towards her for a victory. On the other hand, Rydia also makes for a great black mage. Throwing those spells on top of the insanely powered summons would at least be a great battle to watch, no matter who ends up the victor.

6 Cid Highwind vs. Kain Highwind

Kain Highwind from Final Fantasy 4

Since Final Fantasy II was released, the dragoon role in your party has become a staple throughout the series. While the larger debate is the choice of Final Fantasy IV's Kain Highwind or Cid Highwind from Final Fantasy VII as the better character, that always begs the question of who would win in a fight.

Dragoons typically use long spears and special skill sets that allow for moderately quick yet powerful attacks, as well as specific abilities such as "Jump" that allow the character to leave the fight for a short time, just to come crashing down on the target dealing significant damage. Most will agree that Kain is the cooler looking of the Highwinds, and having the power to wield a small selection of swords doesn't hurt, but Cid has a combat advantage given the surplus of abilities he has at his disposal.

5 Auron vs. Balthier

This fight purely boils down to which character is the better smooth tough guy. Throughout Final Fantasy X Auron ends up being kind of a father figure to Tidus, while still being the parties' biggest damage dealer. Balthier from Final Fantasy XII is a very amusing protagonist with some sweet moves, awesome voice lines, and loves to think of himself as the man on fire. To find out who is the king of cool, fans will have to see how they fare in combat against one another.

4 Rikku/Yuna/Lulu vs. The Gullwings (Rikku/Yuna/Paine)

After the intense ending of Final Fantasy X, we were treated to a continuation of the story with Spira's heroes in the form of Final Fantasy X-2. In this sequel, Yuna is searching for Tidus among other challenges alongside Rikku, who fought alongside the heroes in the first entry, as well as a new teammate, Paine. While in Final Fantasy X-2 all of the girls can be seen with swords, guns, and the like, fans of the games are always happy to share their thoughts on how the original three gals would stand up to the Gullwings in combat. However, Rikku, Yuna, and Lulu all had very specific skills and powers in the former, while the latter made each person very balanced.

3 Gilgamesh vs. Gilgamesh

Yes, one of the most interesting fights we could ever hope to see would be between Gilgamesh and, well, himself. Rather comical compared to most other villains in the franchise, Gilgamesh is very clumsy when it comes to taking care of his duties, despite his skill as a swordsman. Because of his personality and the overall lack of intimidation, aside from his genuine strength, it's only natural that a fight between Gilgamesh and himself would be among the top of the most entertaining battles, especially across his various forms.

2 Sephiroth vs. Kefka

Kefka is an evil madman born out of an experiment, and Sephiroth is a revenge hungry half-alien creature set on avenging his ancestors. While Kefka tortures and drains power from others in the hopes of becoming a god, Sephiroth gains the desire to become a god and destroy Gaia and destroy it's Lifestream. On top of that, Kefka murders, steals, poisons, enslaves, and quite literally causes an apocalypse, while Sephiroth manipulates, murders, and plots against all of mankind, using the protagonists as tools to do it.

Both of these villains are cruel, twisted, and heinous in their way, and fans of the series love it. More importantly, they love to think about what the world would come to if these two battled one another. Something fans can all agree on is no one else would be around to see the result.

1 Cloud vs. Squall

Perhaps the most popular debate in Final Fantasy history lies within the outcome of Cloud versus Squall. Both men are incredibly strong, and look out for those who are important to them. They are relatively equal in terms of pure swordsmanship, but Squall's Gunblade has the advantage over a traditional weapon like Cloud's Buster Sword.  However, much of the debate is between the strength of their respective limit breaks alone. While this fight would be visually brilliant to watch on its own, it would also finally give us the answer to one of the most balanced debates in gaming history. One thing we know for sure, both of them would put up one hell of a fight.
