Final Fantasy 7 blew the gaming world away upon release, stunning players with what the then-new 3D image technology the PlayStation was capable of. However, its predecessor, Final Fantasy 6, remains one of the most beloved entries of the series to this day.
Final Fantasy 6 is rapidly approaching its thirtieth anniversary, and Square Enix is choosing to celebrate the classic in a big way. The recent reveal of a truly stunning, limited edition Terra statue thrilled fans, but then the price blew them away.
Terra's Masterline statue is one of the most expensive produced for the company, coming in at just under a whopping $12,000 USD with a limit of 600 figures. To be fair, this statue is made with quality materials, being produced out of polystone and standing a whopping 30.7 inches. The details visible on the statue certainly make it clear that this isn't a simple cash grab production, but even so, the price has shocked many, including the creator of Final Fantasy himself.
Final Fantasy was originally created by Hironobu Sakaguchi, way back in the late 1980s for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The series was a turning point for Squaresoft at the time, and its presence has been cemented in gaming history since. While some fans may be willing to shell out $12,000 USD for the statue, Sakaguchi himself seems baffled by the cost, wondering in a tweet if this was too much, and asking Square Enix 'Are you okay?' in Japanese.
There's likely many Final Fantasy 6 fans and collectors who are in agreement with Sakaguchi. There's no argument that this statue was intended for die-hard fans of the series to begin with, but spending five digits on a collectors' piece likely strikes many as absurd. While some gaming merchandise like Pokemon cards can sell for outrageous prices, ordering this collector's piece will leave a serious dent in all but the wealthiest fans' wallets.
Of course, some Square Enix fans are accustomed to high prices at this point. Square Enix sold a Chocobo plush for nearly $200 not too long ago, and a Final Fantasy 7 watch based on Cloud and Sephiroth's designs went on sale for $2,500. There are plenty of ways to celebrate Final Fantasy that don't involve opening one's wallet, but for those who want to own an extremely rare and expensive art piece as tribute to their favorite game or series, Final Fantasy 6's Terra statue is available for pre-order.
