Final Fantasy is one of the biggest franchises in the gaming industry and has been around for quite some time, having released its first title for the NES back in 1987. The series now has a multitude of games to its name, both main titles and spin-off titles, and has a large fan following.

There are many recurring elements within the series that fans have come to know and love, such as re-appearing creatures, summonable companions, job classes, races, and NPC names. One of these recurring features is two NPCs that go by the names of Biggs and Wedge, a tribute to the Star Wars characters of Biggs Darklighter and Wedge Antilles. Biggs is generally the superior ranking officer out of the two. Check out every appearance of this duo in the series from worst to best.

11 Miscellaneous References

There are a few times in titles where Biggs and Wedge don't really make an appearance but are referenced in some way. For example, while this dynamic duo didn't feature in the original Final Fantasy, in both the Dawn of Souls and the 20th Anniversary remake versions, when naming the Thief role, their names appear as default naming options. In Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-, Biggs and Wedge are the names of two machines that Zack can snipe. They also get a brief mention in Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII-, where a girl on a train refers to her brother as being part of the rebel group Avalanche, leading fans to believe her brother must be Biggs of Wedge.

Arguably, Biggs and Wedge are referenced in Final Fantasy XIII also in the shop name of  B&W Outfitters in the Retail Network. The logo for this shop actually spells out "V+W", which is likely a nod to Biggs mistakenly being called "Vicks" in Final Fantasy VI. Biggs and Wedge are also referenced in some of the spin-off titles in various ways in the Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy Dimensions series.

10 Final Fantasy XII

Biggs and Wedge arguably make a cameo in Final Fantasy XII under the names of Gibbs and Deweg, two Archadian soldiers who can be met outside the entrance to the Mosphoran Highwaste at the Nalbina Fortress.

However, these names that relate to Biggs and Wedge are only present in the western localization of the game, with these characters having absolutely no relation to Biggs and Wedge in the Japanese release and so some fans believe that this isn't a true Biggs and Wedge appearance.

9 Final Fantasy IV

A cameo of Biggs and Wedge that most fans miss is in Final Fantasy IV, but this is due to the fact they remained unnamed. Biggs and Wedge are the two Red Wings soldiers who question Cecil Harvey, challenging him about the King's orders to raid Mysidia. The fact that these soldiers were Biggs and Wedge was only revealed in Final Fantasy IV: The After Years.

Biggs and Wedge also make a small appearance in Final Fantasy IV -Interlude- where they accompany Cecil and Rosa on the airship.

8 Final Fantasy VI

Biggs and Wedge also appeared in Final Fantasy VI, though in the early SNES versions "Biggs" was accidentally called "Vicks." In this title, they are temporary playable characters who are Gestahlian Empire soldiers that accompany Terra in an attack on Narshe.

They share their sprites with the generic rank-and-file Imperial troopers, however, in the Final Fantasy Anthologies version of the game, an FMV sequence shows them to have different body types from one another (right image).

7 Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

Biggs and Wedge appear in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII as two NPCs in Yusnaan. Wedge is the host of the "Death Safari" and once Lightning has won this she can participate in Biggs's "Death Game", where players are required to defeat a certain number of monsters.

After this, Lightning demands that the two close down their risky games, which they comply with. Lightning can then later find them in the Aromatic Market as traveling musicians who happen to be playing Terra's Theme.

6 Final Fantasy X

Biggs and Wedge appear in Final Fantasy X as the guards in the Blitzball stadium in Luca and can be recruited to join your own team in the game. Wedge is an upper-tier player, while Biggs is only really useful during later levels.

They reprise their role of Blitzball players for the Gullwings in Final Fantasy X-2, but unlike the other Gullwings members, they do not appear outside of Blitzball games.

5 Final Fantasy XV

Biggs Callux and Wedge Kincaid appear in Final Fantasy XV as Aranea Highwind's subordinates who also lead the Third Army Corps 87th Airborne Unit of Niflheim. Though they are both listed as "Officers", their uniforms are different from one another, which would indicate a difference in rank.

Noctis and his companions first encounter the duo when they travel to the Vesperpool, where Aranea leaves the two in charge of the encampment, as well as also reappearing later in the game a few times.

4 Final Fantasy IV: The After Years

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years is set 17 years after the events of Final Fantasy IV. Biggs and Wedge return with a larger role this time; they are still Red Wings soldiers and are accompanying Ceodore to the Adamant Isle for him to become a knight. However, the airship they are traveling on is attacked by monsters, resulting in Biggs protecting Ceodore at the cost of his life.

Ceodore becomes the sole survivor of the crash and the last remaining member of the Red Wings. In a touching moment, Biggs uses his dying breath to relay his final order to Ceodore - to return to Baron alive. However, that's not the last you see of them as their spirits appear later in the game a couple of times to give words of encouragement to Ceodore.

3 Final Fantasy XIV

The franchise's second MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV, also features Biggs and Wedge with the adorable duo appearing as Garlond Ironworks engineers that the player rescues from mercenaries after their airship, the Tiny Bronco, crashes.

They reveal that Biggs and Wedge are not actually their real names, but are aliases that they use in order to protect their families who are still in Garlean territory. Biggs and Wedge continue to feature in the main scenario quests in the base game and all three expansions.

2 Final Fantasy VIII

Despite sharing their character models with the generic Galbadian soldiers and officers, Final Fantasy VIII's rendition of Biggs and Wedge is arguably one of the most memorable. Major Biggs and Lieutenant Wedge serve as comic relief for the game, providing players with many laughs with their hilarious interactions with each other and bumbling through their job roles.

They also appear as Triple Triad cards within the game. At the time of release, this marked the first occasion where Biggs and Wedge survived the events of the game they featured in.

1 Final Fantasy VII

Biggs and Wedge appear in Final Fantasy VII as members of the eco-terrorist group Avalanche. Not only do they take part in the attacks on Midgar's mako reactors, but they also try to defend the town when Shinra attacks Sector 7 by dropping the plate.

Spoilers ahead. These characters reappeared in Final Fantasy VII Remake where their roles were expanded upon and fans got an even better insight into these two lovable characters. Though they died in the original Final Fantasy 7, in Remake Biggs is shown to have survived with Wedge's survival being up in the air, only Jessie's death is confirmed.
