After several years of delays, the anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Remake released in April of this year to much fanfare. And while Final Fantasy 7 Remake received rave reviews from fans and critics alike, surprisingly, the popular RPG hasn't received a major update since it was released.

Since the game's launch, there have been a few issues that have hampered players' enjoyment of Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Usually, major games get updates almost immediately after release or later down the line, but FF7 Remake stands out for its lack of updates,  despite some fans looking for tweaks and changes.

However, the game has finally received its first major patch update, six months after its release, and just as other, first-party PS4 games are getting updates. The issues range from bugs to texture issues, as well as several other technical problems that went unaddressed for quite some time now.

There was a minor stability update to the game a couple of months ago, but it didn't deal with many of the frequently reported issues in the game. The new 1.01 patch update was initially revealed by players, as it showed up as an available download, though the details around it were somewhat unclear. The only information provided for the update was that it will fix various bugs.

More details have since emerged regarding the new patch, revealing the update will fix bugs and other issues in the game, including game crashes players experience while they're in the middle of gameplay, the game freezing, drops in frame rates, as well as the stuttering and lag issues too. Additionally, the patch will cover the game's performance issues and add more stability improvements on top of the previous ones. One last change was ambiguously detailed as  "under the hood" fixes for the game, though it's unclear what that means. The patch notes read:

  • Fixed crashing issues.
  • Addressed freezing and framerate drop issues.
  • Addressed stuttering and lag issues.
  • Performance and stability improvements added.
  • Added other minor under the hood fix.

Among the various criticisms of Final Fantasy 7 Remake's story, the more tangible problems stem from the technical issues in the gameplay. For some, FF7's new update may appear underwhelming compared to the current updates most major game releases receive nowadays. There's no official word yet on any planned future updates to the game for the rest of this year and next year.

Fans will have to see for themselves if the new Final Fantasy 7 Remake update will fix additional technical issues in the game.
