In 2015, Square Enix revealed that it was taking on the massive undertaking of remaking its classic RPG Final Fantasy 7. But instead of doing a 1:1 remake, Square Enix decided to do something different, going to great lengths to flesh out side characters and provide new story content for franchise fans to enjoy. The result was that the first Final Fantasy 7 Remake game focused almost entirely on Midgar, leaving a lot of the story left to be covered in sequels.

Square Enix finally pulled the curtain back on its next Final Fantasy 7 Remake project in a special livestream where it officially announced Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the second installment in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project, and it's due for release in winter 2023 as a PlayStation 5 exclusive game. Fans were given a glimpse of the game, showing Final Fantasy 7 protagonist Cloud walking around with antagonist Sephiroth, setting the stage for some big events that the sequel will explore.

It's been unclear exactly how many "parts" the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project would consist of, as it would largely depend on how much Square Enix planned on fleshing out each area of the game. If every area in Final Fantasy 7 Remake received as much attention as Midgar, then it would take numerous games for Square Enix to tell the complete story. However, it's now been confirmed that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project will be a trilogy.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and an untitled third game will make up the trilogy. Details on what the third game will entail are scarce at the time of this writing, but Square Enix has reportedly already started development on it. Considering this, it's possible that Final Fantasy 7 fans won't have to deal with all that long of a turnaround time between when Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth comes out and when the third game releases, but that remains to be seen.

It will be interesting to see what part of the story the third game in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project encompasses. It really depends on what happens in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and how far that goes into Final Fantasy 7's story. That's anyone's guess at the time of this writing, but fans will have a much clearer idea when they play the game for themselves in winter 2023 when it releases to the masses.
