Final Fantasy 7 Remake has been an undoubted success for publisher and developer Square Enix. The company's financial report which released yesterday showed a successful year for Square Enix thanks in part to the high sales of Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Today, players finally have a sense of just how impactful the remake has been.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake has sold over 5 million units according to the official Twitter account for the game. The specific wording notes that the remake of the 1997 gaming touchstone of Final Fantasy 7 "shipped and digitally sold over five million copies worldwide" since its release in April.

The tweet went further to show that Final Fantasy 7 Remake holds a special honor beyond its immense sales numbers. Final Fantasy 7 Remake is the highest selling Square Enix digital release on any PlayStation platform. This is the second sales record the JRPG has broken as Final Fantasy 7 Remake sold over 3 million copies just three days after its April 10 launch. That means that over the last four months, the game managed to achieve near 2 million additional sales.

With the incredible sales numbers of Final Fantasy 7 Remake putting Square Enix in a good place, it is unsurprising that the series isn't going to end with what is just first part of the Final Fantasy 7 saga. While it was always known that Final Fantasy 7 Remake would be broken up into parts, Square Enix confirmed last month that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 is in active development. This came with the caveat that the team is currently working remotely which will likely cause a delay in the next chapter for Cloud and the gang.

With FF7R Part 2 now moving along, many have taken to speculating where the next game is going to go with the story, a controversial and hotly debated element of Part 1. The narrative of the second chapter has been put into question with many focusing on how the Whispers of FF7R have shaped Part 2 and heavy speculation on which characters are coming back to the battle.

It has been an impressive ride for Final Fantasy 7 Remake throughout the last decade. Considered one of the big "dream games" that was realized at E3 2015 alongside The Last Guardian's return and Shenmue 3 becoming a reality. As more players continue to begin their journey in Midgar, there are still many secrets and easter eggs in FF7R that players might have missed.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is available exclusively for PlayStation 4.
