Sony typically announces the free PlayStation Plus games on the last Wednesday of each month, but it did things differently this time around. Perhaps wanting to keep the focus on its State of Play presentation, Sony held off on announcing the free PS Plus games for March 2021 until earlier this morning, confirming four free games including Final Fantasy 7 RemakeFinal Fantasy 7 Remake is one of the biggest PS4 games of 2020, so its inclusion in the free PS Plus lineup is a big deal for sure, but there is a major catch that subscribers should be aware of.

The big reveal at the end of the PlayStation State of Play was Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, the PS5 version of the game that includes some sweeping enhancements. Those that have paid for Final Fantasy 7 Remake outside of PS Plus will be able to upgrade to the PS5 version at no additional cost. But anyone that claims Final Fantasy 7 Remake through their PlayStation Plus subscription won't be able to upgrade to the PS5 version for free when it comes out this summer.

This revelation will likely upset some fans who were hoping to try the PS5 version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake next summer using their PS Plus copy. Perhaps this is part of the reason why Sony has included four free PS Plus games for March 2021. Along with Final Fantasy 7 Remake, fans can claim the PS5 puzzle game Maquette, the Souls-like shooter game Remnant: From the Ashes, and as a bonus, the PlayStation VR game Farpoint.

Despite this, some fans may still be upset that they will still have to pay full price for Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PS5 if they claim the game through PS Plus, as the new story content is PS5 exclusive. Besides confirming the PS5 upgrade, Square Enix also announced a new Yuffie episode that's all about the popular ninja character. Only those on PS5 can play the Yuffie episode, so they will either need to outright buy Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade on PS5 at full price or upgrade their paid version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PS4 and purchase the Yuffie DLC separately.

It's strange for a free PS Plus game to have a restriction like this, but it's not the first time that there's been some discrepancy between PS4 and PS5. As some may recall, when Bugsnax was a free PS Plus game, it only applied to the PS5 version of the game, leaving out those who had yet to upgrade from their PS4 consoles. Similarly, only the PS5 version of Maneater was made available to subscribers when it was free. There have been some examples of PS Plus going the other way as well, though, like when players were able to claim Worms Rumble for both PS4 and PS5.

With fans having just learned about the free PS Plus games for March 2021, it remains to be seen if this decision will have any major backlash, though that should become apparent in the hours and days ahead.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is out now for PS4 and will come to PS5 on June 10.
