When dealing with a game as iconic as Final Fantasy 7, it's always going to be impossible to make every fan happy with a remake. The team behind Final Fantasy 7 Remake has already confirmed that this will be more than a graphical upgrade and that some changes to gameplay are coming, so many fans are curious what that means for the classic JRPG turn-based combat system. New details suggest there might be a combat feature to switch between players in a more action-based encounter.

Although Final Fantasy 15 was more action-based, even that game didn't allow actual character swapping. Noctis could call on the rest of his party for help with a quick combo attack, but the player couldn't take over control of another charater at will (though this may happen in future FF15 DLC). New descriptions of Final Fantasy 7 Remake combat encounters seem to suggest that there will be some ability to switch between characters at will.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Kingdom Hearts 3 director Tetsuya Nomura discussed some of the combat changes in a recent interview...

“Rather than just ending it at that scaffold, we’ve made wide use of the space and developed a battle that takes advantage of the map’s characteristics where you’ll fight while switching between Cloud and Barret. For example, when there’s an enemy in a position that can’t be reached by Cloud’s sword, it’s more effective to switch to Barret. It’s becoming strategic in that way, as well. The Guard Scorpion will change modes in the middle of the battle and demonstrate behavior not in the original version. Also in this screenshot, it should be noted that missiles and such are coming down. It’s become a significantly flashy battle.”

Although players do have the ability to control each party member's moves in the turn-based encounters of the original FF7, swapping at-will in the middle of action-based combat would be a massive change. This will be exciting news for players who enjoyed the updates made to combat in FF15, but traditionalists will likely be very unhappy. Hopefully, there will be an option to toggle between turn-based and action-based combat, so that both types of players can enjoy the long-awaited remake.
