While the world itself is still very far from normal, 2021 is shaping up to be a good one in the gaming industry. Delays like Hogwarts Legacy are bound to happen, but there's more games releasing, more information coming out, and enough to keep all wheels spinning. For Square Enix and the Final Fantasy franchise, that's two key games many fans may be awaiting: Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 and Final Fantasy 16.

Even then, Square Enix will likely be a busy beaver with other titles like Project Athia, but for both of the aforementioned games, fans should have certain expectations. Nothing is set in stone, of course, but with both Final Fantasy games heavy on the tongue, it's hard to ignore what could possibly come.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2

Interestingly enough, of the two, there's less known about Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2. It'll, of course, continue the adventure from the first part, but how it's handling the world opening up, how it's handling key characters like Yuffie and Vincent Valentine is in the air, and little else than its existence is known. As such, fans should probably keep an eye on the first part for an upcoming revelations. For example, April will be its 1-year anniversary, and it'll be hard to ignore the second game, much less the first then.

There are rumors that Final Fantasy 7 Remake is getting PC and PS5 ports when its timed-exclusivity is over, which sounds like common sense. With the anniversary up and these potential ports released, the only thing Square Enix could really fill the rest of the year with is talk of the second. Marketing on it, depending on how far it is into development, will likely begin this summer or fall, barring any major delay. Square Enix, like many others, is still dealing with the fallout of the pandemic, but it'll likely address Part 2 to some degree this year.

It would be hardpressed for it to released this year, it seems, but an announcement of its release window, gameplay trailers showcasing the new areas, and commentary on any changes that should be expected seems like a safe enough bet. After all, while little is known about its development, it has been said that future Final Fantasy 7 parts wouldn't take as long to develop.

Final Fantasy 16

For Final Fantasy 16, bets are off the table. FF7 has the first game to follow and build from, but Final Fantasy 16 is an entirely new entry. Square Enix did showcase some of the game, reveal details about its game world (Valisthea), and even some background information on Clive, Joshua, Jill, and more. There's two key things to note in regards to Final Fantasy 16 news: Square Enix promised more was coming (so it's unlikely to go as quiet as Elden Ring) and many suggest that it's further in development than thought.

The first is reassuring, but the second is interesting. It practically begs the question if Final Fantasy 16 will release this year, and while there's still a ton of information to come, that's not impossible. What'll be interesting to see is when its marketing begins and how forthcoming it is. For example, if there is a PlayStation State of Play in the next couple weeks/months, it'll likely be there. If it comes to show another hand, then fans can expect solid information on gameplay and story, but it may just be a release window in that regard.

If it comes in full force, fans should be ready for info dumps on world and lore to prepare for the game's launch this year. Now, again, this is purely speculation. Fans can expect Square Enix to live up to its promise, fans can expect a bevy of traditional and supplemental information, but fans should wait and see how the game tackles its first 2021 outing before placing any bets.
