A new mod for the PC version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake lets fans play as the blocky, polygonal characters they love from the original version of the game. Though people were clamoring for over 20 years for a remaster or remake of the iconic 1997 RPG title, now that they’ve gotten one, it’s time to reverse the clock a little.

The original Final Fantasy 7 is still an incredible game, even with its blocky characters, turn-based combat, and sometimes exceedingly slow pace. There’s a certain charm to its clunkiness, and Barret’s huge rectangular forearms, Cloud’s spiky hair that seems more dangerous than his Buster Sword, and the random boxy objects that almost can’t be identified are no doubt viewed fondly by many gamers.

That’s why it comes as no surprise that there is now a mod that transforms the smooth, high-definition characters of Final Fantasy 7 Remake into the low-poly box people that so many remember fondly. Adding the Polygonal Players mod by FantasyRaiderr is a simple drag and drop for those enjoying Final Fantasy 7 Remake via its PC port. As pointed out by PC Gamer, the character models used in the add-on come from the 1998 Windows version of the title, which is evident because they have mouths.

The Polygonal Players mod replaces Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, and Barret, as well as Yuffie and Sonon from Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s Intermission DLC. Users will see the changes both in-game and during cutscenes that are rendered by the game engine. However, pre-rendered cinematic cutscenes will retain the high-def character models from Final Fantasy 7 Remake. And because only the character models are swapped out, everything else about the game remains high-res, which can be a bit jarring or comical, depending on how one looks at it.

Besides the Polygonal Players mod, which may appeal to gamers looking to either scratch that nostalgic itch or just bring a bit of lighthearted fun to the game, there are a number of other useful and creative mods for Final Fantasy 7 Remake. The work-in-progress PS1 Battle Sounds mod may jive well with Polygonal Players, as the creator intends to replace the remake’s sounds with more classic audio. There are also mods that allow players to adjust the hair and eye color of Cloud and his friends, or even transform FF7 Remake’s characters into those from other franchises entirely.

There are of course also technical mods that help fix various bugs that might be causing frustration for some Final Fantasy 7 Remake players. And for those who still don’t think FF7 Remake is gorgeous enough, there are add-ons that can implement HDR lighting, improve textures, and even adjust the camera’s distance or fix its angle to match the original game.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is currently available on PC, PS4, and PS5.
