A recent interview with co-directors Naoki Hamaguchi and Motomu Toriyama, as well as Battle Director Teruki Endo, has revealed some less than satisfying information about the status of Final Fantasy 7 Remake. With the highly anticipated game finally releasing this April, many have guessed when the second episode would be released, but now some more information has become clear about it.

In the interview, Hamaguchi makes clear that the second episode of Final Fantasy 7 Remake is still in the planning process, meaning that it may not be as close as most fans had originally assumed, as games can often spend years in the planning stage.

Hamaguchi, Toriyama, and Endo continue to elaborate on what their roles were in the first episode as well as what challenges lie ahead and what goals they each have individually for the second episode of Square Enix's masterpiece. The tweet below shows a transcription of this portion of the interview.

It is worth noting that although this was posted yesterday, in reference to a game released in April, the interview itself was recorded in mid-March, meaning it is possible that the team at Square Enix is farther now than they had initially let on in this interview. That said, planning for video games, especially ones of this scale, can take a long time, so odds are they are still in the planning stages. Although this may come as a disappointment to many, it does make sense considering the vastly different scope of the second episode which features more of the world than the first.

Hamaguchi continues to explain that although the first episode focused entirely on Midgar, the second episode will open up a vast world to the player, and the biggest challenge the team faces here is finding a way to convey the same level of detail and novelty that the first episode did. Although this is certainly a hefty task, a lot of the groundwork should have already been laid by the first episode, as major things such as the combat systems, character designs, and story are already decided and worked out for the most part.

This news is mostly inconclusive regarding an actual release date for the next episode, as it is very possible that it could arrive much sooner than this interview implies. Alternatively, it could theoretically be years before the second episode arrives, but hopefully, Square Enix has planned around the long development time in order to get these episodes out in a timely fashion.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is available now exclusively for PS4.
