Final Fantasy is one gaming's most treasured franchises, and Final Fantasy 7 is considered by many to be the series' finest installment. For that reason, fans are especially eager to find out when they'll be able to re-experience the 1997 classic in modern high definition glory. In a recent interview, the project's director shed light on just such details.

Square Enix announced back in 2015 that they were developing a remake of Final Fantasy 7, something director Tetsuya Nomura now sees as a mistake to do so early in the project's development. Still, it's understandable that fans are beginning to run out of patience. Fortunately, it seems the remake is making progress, despite earlier reports that Square Enix had halted development to focus on Kingdom Hearts 3.

Speaking to Famitsu, Nomura reaffirmed that development on the Final Fantasy 7 remake is "going favorably," all but squashing rumors that things had slowed down. That said, the director did clarify that, for the moment, Square Enix PR's primary focus is on Kingdom Hearts 3 and that Final Fantasy 7 would take priority once that's complete.

The much-needed positive news comes as rumors are circulating that Square Enix has already begun work on a major AAA title for the PlayStation 5. There is some speculation that the rumored PS5 title is, in fact, the Final Fantasy 7 remake, which would suggest that its release is still quite a ways away.

While it's easy to feel impatient waiting for the remake, it's important to remember that such an ambitious remake of an iconic game like Final Fantasy 7 should take time. By all indications, Square Enix is aiming to go above and beyond what fans might expect from a traditional remake. In fact, a recent statement by Nomura himself seems to suggest that the remake will incorporate elements of Final Fantasy spin-offs like Crisis Core.

For those who just can't wait it out until the remake is released, the next best thing may be to hook up the original PlayStation and take a trip through memory lane. Another option is to pick up a PlayStation Classic when it releases December 3, as it's been confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 will be included on the roster.

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake does not have an official release date.
