Square Enix has released a new collection of screenshots for Final Fantasy 7 Remake, one of which introduces a new mini-game for players to tackle. Its called Corneo Colosseum, and as the name implies, it'll allow players to battle enemies in an arena-like setting.

The Corneo Colosseum belongs to Don Corneo, a man that rules over the Sector 6 section of the Midgar slums called "Wall Market." He hosts auditions for a new "wife" every night in a place called the Honey Bee inn.

Players will find the Colosseum, however, in Don Corneo's mansion. The mansion itself serves as a primary setting for the mission that involves Cloud cross-dressing, so players will more than likely discover the mini-game during that time. It would be relatively easy to introduce the arena in this way, and then leave it as something players can return to whenever they want afterward.

The screenshots that depict the mini-game show Cloud and Aerith battling against a Hellhound and a grunt. But the arena will throw a variety of different enemies at the player. When they win these battles, they'll be able to earn prizes. Though, what exactly the prizes consist of remain unspecified at the time of this writing.

However, Corneo Colosseum does seem to draw inspiration from Battle Square, which was a mini-game appearing in the original Final Fantasy 7. Like the Colosseum, Battle Square placed players into an arena to fight against enemies for rewards. They could earn things like Summoning Materia, equipment, and even Limit Breaks. The further into the game participates were, the more difficult the enemies they faced became, and as a result, players received greater the rewards upon victory. Corneo Colosseum will probably follow a similar system as its inclusion more than likely serves to replace Battle Square.

As for why Battle Square would need to be replaced: it's not a location that can be found in Midgar. Players only had access to it after leaving Midgar for the first time and traveling to a place called Gold Saucer, which was a large amusement park in the original Final Fantasy 7. Final Fantasy 7 Remake, however, won't cover anything outside of Midgar and will only chronicle Cloud and Avalanche's first outing in the city. As a result, Battle Square won't work for the title, and Square Enix probably opted to implement Corneo Colosseum to rectify this.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake will launch on April 10, 2020, for the PlayStation 4.
