Amazon has implemented a new policy in response to COVID-19 that will no longer allow it to accept nonessential goods until April 5. Naturally, the retailer included video games such as Final Fantasy 7 Remake in the "nonessential" category, meaning those that pre-ordered the game through Amazon would be at risk of not receiving a copy on the day Remake releases.

Amazon, of course, informed Remake customers of this new development through email, but whatever wording it chose to use caused some confusion. Some readers mistook Amazon's delay to mean that the official date of Final Fantasy 7 Remake had suffered another setback. Today, both Square Enix and Amazon have taken to social media with official statements to clear up the confusion.

In no uncertain terms, Amazon has stated that Final Fantasy 7 Remake's release date has not changed. The retailer understands that its emails may have caused some concern, but the game will still release on April 10. The official Final Fantasy 7 Remake Twitter account corroborated this statement by retweeting it. It then tweeted the announcement from Square Enix.

According to Square Enix, the situation involving COVID-19 has complicated its release plans with partnering retailers. Final Fantasy 7 Remake will still arrive in April as scheduled, but some players may not receive their copy on day one. The developer isn't sure either way because its retailers have different policies across different regions, and these policies may change depending on how the situation with the virus plays out.

However, Square is doing everything in its power to ensure that fans that have pre-ordered Remake will get their copy the day the game releases. It's monitoring the situation carefully and will come back to fans on Friday, March 20, with more information. All in all, delaying the game's official release date would be something of a last resort.

Understandably, both of these statements from Amazon and Square Enix have eased the minds of fans worried about a possible delay. Square Enix only recently announced that Final Fantasy 7 Remake had gone gold, so it would be dishearting to hear that it received another setback due to circumstances out the developer's control.

However, it is admittedly regrettable that some fans who have pre-ordered the game may not receive their copy the moment it releases. If this turns out to be the case, Square's Friday statement may reveal when they'll get the game instead.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake will launch for the PlayStation 4 on April 10, 2020.
