Square Enix took a chance on the Nintendo Switch by releasing a classic-style JRPG called Octopath Traveler as an exclusive for the console. Both Square Enix and Nintendo underestimated Octopath Traveler, and it went on to sell over 1 million units worldwide. Now that Square Enix knows there is an audience for its games on Nintendo's handheld/home console hybrid, it's announced that Final Fantasy 7 and a host of other Final Fantasy games are coming to the Nintendo Switch in the coming months.

Final Fantasy 15: Pocket Edition is kicking off this string of Final Fantasy releases for the Switch, and it is available now. It will be joined by the spinoff games World of Final Fantasy: Maxima on November 8 and Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon: Everybuddy! this winter. 2019, meanwhile, will be the year when some older Final Fantasy games will be coming to the system.

In 2019, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles - Remastered Edition, Final Fantasy 7Final Fantasy 9, Final Fantasy 10/10-2 HD Remaster, and Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age will all be coming to the Nintendo Switch. This is a historical announcement for a number of reasons, including the fact that this is the first time that Final Fantasy 7 is releasing on a home console that is not a PlayStation system.

What is somewhat unclear at this point is if the versions of Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 9 that are releasing for the Switch are the original versions or the upgraded editions. They will be most likely be the upgraded versions, which means fans have somewhat sharper graphics to look forward to, as well as a variety of cheat codes that will make some significant quality of life improvements for those who want to experience the games without some of the old-school gameplay mechanics at work.

In the meantime, it's also unclear why Final Fantasy 8 wasn't included in the lineup. However, it's worth pointing out that the enhanced version of Final Fantasy 8 has yet to make it to the PS4 either, so perhaps Square Enix is planning on bringing it there before it releases it for the Switch.

Of course, that's just speculation at this time. We should learn more about the Switch versions of these popular Final Fantasy games in the coming months.

Final Fantasy 7 is out now for PC, PS1, PS4, iOS, Android, and Nintendo Switch.
