With the long-awaited Final Fantasy 7 Remake releasing to rave reviews, interest in the FF7 story is at an all-time high. Many fans know that the story extends beyond the original game with things like Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 and Dirge of Cerberus, but those games are only available on older platforms, and not easily accessible to most. However, if a recent rumor is to be believed, that could be changing in the near future.

A Reddit user going by the name sqeueenixleaker0404 claims that something called Final Fantasy 7: Legacy Collection is in the works for the Nintendo Switch. Apparently, Final Fantasy 7: Legacy Collection will consist of Crisis CoreDirge of Cerberus, and Before Crisis. The supposed leaker doesn't clarify if the original Final Fantasy 7 will be included in the bundle, though that would make sense giving its title and the fact that game is already available on the Switch.

While it's certainly possible that Square Enix plans on remastering Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus for modern consoles, fans should take this information with a big grain of salt, as there are a number of things that make it suspect. The biggest issue is that no other platforms besides the Switch are mentioned, which would be bizarre and inconsistent. Another issue is that it seems highly unlikely that Before Crisis has a chance of getting a port.

For the uninitiated, Before Crisis was an action-RPG prequel to Final Fantasy 7 that launched all the way back in 2004 for Japanese mobile devices. Before Crisis had a multiplayer element to it, but its online servers were shut down in 2018 and it was never released outside of Japan. Considering this, it seems highly unlikely that Square Enix will be re-releasing the game on modern platforms.

However, perhaps its story could be collected in a theoretical Final Fantasy 7: Legacy Collection bundle. After all, that's what Square Enix did when it came to bringing the mobile Kingdom Hearts titles to modern platforms. Alternatively, maybe Square Enix will remaster the game without its multiplayer elements. However, that seems like it would amount to a lot of extra work that wouldn't necessarily be worth it for the development team.

If the supposed Final Fantasy 7: Legacy Collection is real, then fans can "expect more information soon," according to the leaker. Nintendo is rumored to be hosting a Nintendo Direct in June, so maybe we'll learn more then. Until an official announcement is made, though, fans should just treat this as an unverified rumor.

Final Fantasy 7: Legacy Collection is rumored to be in development for the Switch.
