On Friday, Square Enix announced it would be holding a special Final Fantasy 7 25th Anniversary event on June 16. Fans had been expecting a Square Enix event announcement, but a Final Fantasy 7-specific event took some by surprise. It's unclear whether fans should expect announcements only for Final Fantasy 7-related projects or if Square Enix has other ideas in mind. A new rumor adds intrigue to the situation, claiming that Square Enix isn't the only "big company" involved in the show.Reporter Pierre Coppi of indie gaming site PowerWave83 shared an interesting claim on their Twitter account following the announcement of Square Enix's Final Fantasy 7 25th Anniversary Celebration Broadcast. They told their followers that "something weird is definitely cooking," because they've received word about the event not only from Square Enix but also from another big company. The implication being that there will be a major announcement coming that few would expect.RELATED: Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 Reveal Planned for This YearDue to recent rumors regarding a potential Square Enix acquisition being in the works, some might be predicting that Sony or another major company like Microsoft could be involved. While anything is possible, Coppi does clarify a couple of further details. He says explicitly that the company is neither Sony nor Microsoft, so PlayStation and Xbox aren't who the rumor is about. Other companies Coppi mentions as not who he's talking about include Koei Tecmo and Arc System Works.

Other, more manageable ideas regarding who might be partnering with Square Enix include Epic Games. Epic could be working on a Final Fantasy 7 crossover with Fortnite, a much more realistic (and inevitable) partnership opportunity. Licensing partnerships like this would help flesh out an event like the Final Fantasy 7 25th Anniversary event without requiring any major announcements.

There is any number of other gaming companies that could be who Coppi is talking about, to the point it seems fruitless to speculate. But one interesting theory is that it isn't a gaming company at all. It could be a company like Netflix, which could mean an anime or live-action show announcement.

Final Fantasy 7 fans should probably maintain a level of skepticism about this rumor, too. The report may not lead to anything, or it may have been made by mistake. Fans will probably be more than content with a Final Fantasy 7 event solely hosted by Square Enix, especially if it means news regarding Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2. If there's more news beyond that, it'll be great, too. The Final Fantasy 7 25th Anniversary event airs on June 16.
