When people think of JRPGs, Final Fantasy is often the first franchise that comes to mind, and perhaps the best know game in that franchise is Final Fantasy 7. The game's vibrant characters and incredible take on early 3D level design have made it one of the most renowned video games of the early 3D era, and fans have consistently made incredible art over the years in appreciation of it. One fan has posted their work to Reddit: a complete collection of the main characters from the original PS1 version of Final Fantasy 7, in all their polygonal glory.

For those who were around for the early days of the 3D gaming, it was certainly a time of experimentation. Many games struggled to translate from their 2D roots to the fully realized z-planes of a three dimensional space, while other games flourished and became instant classics. With 3D printing slowly becoming more accessible, fans are finding ways to recreate parts of their favorite titles in the real world, with items such as Geralt's medallion from The Witcher being able to be printed to look like it popped straight out of the game.

Reddit user dogofpavlov has managed to print off an entire set of characters from the original PlayStation version of Final Fantasy 7, managing to capture the characters perfectly using their 3D printer. The statuettes stand at around 5-6 inches tall according to dogofpavlov, and they were all printed out white and hand-painted by the Redditor to look as close to the original characters as possible. The main cast are all present, with fan-favorites Cloud, Tifa, Sephiroth, and Aerith all making an appearance in their original, boxy state.

Notably missing from the statues are their eyes, with dogofpavlov saying that they were "scared to paint the eyes," and would instead print them on "sticker paper" and attach them to the plastic statues later. Many pointed out that this was a wise move, as even a slight miscalculation in alignment of eyes on figurines can make them look entirely wrong. Dogofpavlov used a series of templates for the statues available at Thingiverse, a 3D printing website that has an archive of user-created models available to those with 3D printers, and the templates are oddly accurate to the aesthetic of PS1 era Final Fantasy games.

What is wonderful about these figurines, besides being a great nostalgic look at the polygonal graphics of the early 3D era of gaming, is that they were able to be created thanks to the open-source nature of the 3D printing community. The availability of such detailed templates for printing is what has helped the community grow and allowed new 3D printers learn the mechanics of the machines. The custom paint job by dogofpavlov has helped to make it their own, while also capturing what fans still love about Final Fantasy 7 all these years later.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is available now on PS4 and PS5.
