Final Fantasy 6 Pixel Remaster is looking to provide a definitive version of the classic SNES title for both old players and newcomers to enjoy. With the rest of the Final Fantay Pixel Remasters already released, Square Enix needs just a little bit more time with this final title, delaying it by a couple of months.

When they were announced earlier this year, the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters were hit with some skepticism, in part due to Square Enix's track record in porting those original games. Being exclusive to mobile and PC, the Pixel Remasters have totally skipped the console realm, leaving many fans eager to give these ports a try disappointed. Previous Final Fantasy ports to mobile and PC have been certainly playable, but often came with changes that didn't sit well with fans, like the smoothed out art style of Final Fantasy 6 on mobile. The idea of these ports was to provide a similar remaster treatment to all six Final Fantasy games without sacrificing their original design.

Square Enix has delayed Final Fantasy 6 Pixel Remaster to February 2022, the company announced in a new update. "In order to bring you the best experience possible," Square Enix starts, "we're giving ourselves the necessary time to apply final polish while finishing development on the game." There has been little consistency with the release timing of the Pixel Remasters, with the most recent game, Final Fantasy 5 Pixel Remaster, having released on November 10, 2021, and others in September and July. The version of Final Fantasy 6 that was previously for sale on mobile and Steam was removed this past summer.

This update also brings information regarding Final Fantasy 6 Pixel Remaster's pre-purchase bonus items. New items have been added including two new special soundtracks, "Locke's Theme (Timelapse Remix)" and "Aria di Mezzo Carattere (Instrumental)," joining the "Timelapse Remixes" of "The Decisive Battle," "Terra's Theme," and "Searching for Friends." Square Enix describes the "Timelapse Remix" as special arrangements that start with the original rendition of the song, before "gradually transition[ing] to the reworked alternative soundtrack version." Fans will also get two types of Pixel Remaster wallpapers based on all six titles, not just Final Fantasy 6.

Delays can often be immediately disappointing, especially for highly anticipated titles like Final Fantasy 6 Pixel Remaster. However, delays can often be the necessary glue that makes a game the best version it can be, as there have been many titles that could have benefitted from some extra time in the oven. Look at Halo Infinite's delay, the game getting an extra year of development and becoming one of 2021's biggest and most popular releases. Hopefully Square Enix uses these additional months to deliver the quality remaster that fans are expecting.
