A new rating from the Pan European Game Information system suggests that Square Enix plans to release Final Fantasy 6 for the PC sometime in the near future.

Square Enix hasn't made an official announcement in regards to such a project, but the publisher has re-released a number of other classic Final Fantasy games on the platform recently, and the reception from PC gamers has been largely positive. In the wake of such a warm response, it only makes sense for Square Enix to continue bringing the older Final Fantasy titles to the PC, and fans of the franchise often consider Final Fantasy 6 to be one of the best games in the series.

If Square Enix ends up following the same business model as they have with their other PC re-releases, Final Fantasy 6 will likely be an enhanced version of the mobile port of the same name rather than the original title or an entirely new remake. For those who don't think Final Fantasy classics are a good fit on the mobile gaming platform, the PC re-releases have been a welcome alternative, and it's likely Final Fantasy 6 will be no exception.

Final Fantasy 6, which was originally released for the SNES in 1994, has appeared in various forms on the PlayStation, Game Boy Advance, and digital storefronts since. While the game is renowned for its ground-breaking narrative and deep turn-based gameplay, it also features some of the early titles' most ambitious character designs, and it will be interesting to see if Square Enix revamps the art style for the PC the same way they did with Final Fantasy 5.

Of course, while the chance to revisit some old favorites is exciting news, most of the gaming world is still waiting on news about Square Enix's newest Final Fantasy project, Final Fantasy 15. The game's director, Hajime Tabata, recently revealed a second Final Fantasy 15 demo was in production, but offered no time table for the demo or the full game's release. News about the Final Fantasy 7 HD Remake has been similarly obscure, although the game's hero, Cloud, was announced for Super Smash Bros. recently.

For a series with fans so dedicated they fought hard for the minor inclusion of Moogles in Final Fantasy 15, this kind of wait can be agonizing. Luckily, Square Enix has taken to rehashing some iconic installments on new platforms in the meantime, and it looks like Final Fantasy 6 should be arriving sometime soon as yet another engrossing distraction for gamers waiting on the next big thing in the JRPG genre.
