Sony has officially announced its next State of Play presentation, which is scheduled to take place on June 2 at 3 PM PT/5 PM CT. Unfortunately, for those who were hoping for a God of War: Ragnarok trailer there, it seems incredibly unlikely. Sony confirmed that this 30-minute State of Play would focus on two things: third-party games from Sony’s partners, as well as a look at some PS VR 2 games.

For the latter, there’s no telling what could be there as a lot of PS VR 2 projects have been under wraps. There’s a chance that PS VR 2's Horizon: Call of the Mountain will be there, which is exciting, but perhaps the prospect with the most potential to be there is one fans have been waiting a long time for, Final Fantasy 16.

Final Fantasy 16 – State of Play, June 2.

While there are always expectations and hopes for a State of Play that don’t properly get fulfilled, Final Fantasy 16 being there is more concrete than most hopes. First, when Sony says third-party partners, it’s hardly closer to any company than Square Enix. Many would not be surprised if Sony acquired Square Enix someday, but that’s a whole different ballpark. The most convincing evidence for its presence there comes directly from Square Enix itself though.

A Final Fantasy 16 trailer is ready and waiting in the wings. Producer Yoshi-P confirmed this a couple of weeks ago, also adding that the game was nearing the end of its development cycle. However, he added that he thought the trailer would release soon but couldn’t explain why it wasn’t being released yet. Having somewhere to showcase Final Fantasy 16 makes the most sense, and a June 2 State of Play featuring third-party partners is the most likely scenario for that.

Plus, Square Enix promised fans that would get more Final Fantasy 16 news sometime this Spring, and with the season ending on June 21, it’s hard to picture FF16 being anywhere else except for this State of Play. What else will be there remains to be seen, but a new Final Fantasy 16 trailer is about as safe of a bet as they come.

Beyond the trailer, it’ll be interesting to see if FF16's release date will be announced there. There have been rumors that Final Fantasy 16 will release in 2022, and if it’s going to confirm a date (or at least a window), this would be the time and place to do so.

Final Fantasy 16 is in development for PS5.
