Famitsu magazine, Japan's foremost video game publication, regularly polls its readers, asking which games they are most excited about. While the sample size is small, it is generally indicative of which games are generating the most buzz in Japan. Despite the fact that details about Final Fantasy 16 have been scarce since the reveal trailer last year, it seems that fans can't hold back their excitement for the latest entry in the storied franchise with Final Fantasy 16 topping the latest Famitsu 'Most Anticipated' list.

Updates are expected in 2021 for Final Fantasy 16, which could be driving some of the excitement, and the game's rise up the Most Anticipated chart. As fans wait for more information, and the longer the radio silence from Square Enix continues, the more anticipation builds as fans get anxious for news. With only the reveal trailer and a few details shared by Square Enix to go on, fans have speculated about what the game will be like. Some fans are wary FF16 might lean into action-oriented gameplay, but that is mostly speculation at this point.

As fans theorize what Final Fantasy 16 will be like, what is quite certain is that the game is on the radar of many gamers. Topping Famitsu's 'Most Anticipated' games list, Final Fantasy 16 has managed to create hype with very little actual marketing to speak of. The mere mention of its name generates excitement for long-time fans of the franchise. Following close behind on the chart are Tales of Arise, Resident Evil Village, and Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2.

Previously, Tales of Arise had topped this chart, with fans in Japan excited about the next release in the long-running RPG series. A new trailer for Tales of Arise dropped last month, and with the promise of more information to come, the game remains high on the 'Most Anticipated' list.

It should be noted that Resident Evil Village, if votes cast for the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game were combined, would find itself in an exact tie for first with Final Fantasy 16. The action horror title from Capcom is going all out in the lead up to the game's release. A new trailer for Resident Evil Village is out, and a demo is giving players their first crack at the game, building more hype. While this poll was conducted at the end of March, it shows that excitement is high for RE: Village as well.

Final Fantasy 16 still feels like a long way off, but with the promise that more information about the game is coming soon, fans' anticipation is building. The next update should provide more concrete details on Clive Rosfield's journey and just what Final Fantasy 16 is all about.

Final Fantasy 16 is in development for PS5.
