A video showcasing the upcoming Final Fantasy 16 reveals how similar the RPG's combat will be in comparison to Capcom's hit action title, Devil May Cry 5. The similarities between Final Fantasy 16 and Devil May Cry 5's combat likely aren't too much of a surprise to many fans who have been following the project since its development. Alongside veteran Square Enix staff members, fans got a likely indicator of its similarities when the developer revealed Final Fantasy 16's combat director, former Capcom employee Ryota Suzuki. Suzuki's previous works include high-octane action titles such as Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Devil May Cry 4, Dragon's Dogma, and Devil May Cry 5, just to name a few.Fans got a look at Final Fantasy 16's combat earlier through various previews of the game, sometimes against the giant Eikons with bombastic set pieces or highlighted against specific story beats. Square Enix recently released a brief clip where it showed off Clive in battle against a normal enemy, along with how he works in tandem with his wolf companion Torgal. One fan compared this clip to a similar set of mechanics within Devil May Cry 5.RELATED: Final Fantasy 14 Producer Teases Potential Crossover Content With Final Fantasy 16This quick comparison video was edited together by @aitaikimochi or Audrey on Twitter, with gameplay from both DMC5 and FF16. In the clip, Clive can send Torgal to attack his enemy with swipes, before having the player follow up with Clive's own sword strikes. Audrey noted that Clive and Torgal is similar to V's combat in DMC5, where they likely even share the same movesets as well. V's playstyle in particular focuses on having the enemies weakened by his partners, Griffon, Shadow, and Nightmare, with V needing to control them from afar before dealing the final blow.

Audrey also showed another clip that showcased a setpiece that had Clive climbing up a rocky path while wind is blowing around him. She notes that Final Fantasy 16 takes inspiration from Devil May Cry 5 in this way too, where the lack of UI in certain areas is similar to Capcom's action title, making the moment more cinematic as a player explores. She even highlights the visuals, complimenting Devil May Cry 5's graphics in particular by calling it "gorgeous."

Fans are still split on the game's action-oriented direction, with some wishing the series would go back to its turn-based roots and others being more accepting of the approach. With the game having varied forms of combat, such as the various Eikons in Final Fantasy 16, the end result might feel like a blend of several DMC characters in one package.

Final Fantasy 16 will launch on June 22, exclusively for PS5.
