When Final Fantasy 15 was released in 2016, publisher Square Enix promised that the game would receive story-based downloadable content post-launch. Despite the title having already received several such additions, players can expect further DLC updates to be released throughout 2019.

During a panel at PAX East yesterday, Square Enix took the time to outline its upcoming content roadmap for Final Fantasy 15, which included four new character-based story episodes, with the final installment supposedly providing an “alternate grand finale.”

Details for each upcoming episode is as follows:

  • Titled “The Conflict of the Sage”, the first new episode will focus attention on Ardyn’s story, particularly his “clashes with the Astrals” and his long hatred of Lucius.
  • While described as more of a side story and not an episode, the character at the focus of the second planned DLC release is Aranea Highwind. The episode will detail the final days of the empire, which Square Enix have described as “Aranea’s worst day”.
  • Titled “The Choice of Freedom”, the second episode will focus on Lunafreya. The addition will detail Luna’s fate, which supposedly “not even death can free her from.”
  • Titled “The Final Strike”, the third and final episode planned for 2019 will see Noctis take center The contents of the episode will detail his “final battle”, which will hopefully secure a good future for his people.

Square Enix’s decision to release new story-driven content for Final Fantasy 15 should not come as a surprise. Last year, the publisher ran a survey asking players which character’s stories they would like to see detailed in future DLC additions, with the choices above apparently having won out. The four additional episodes will mean that the game has received a total of eight story-based content updates since its release.

Although the game’s narrative received a mixed response when first released, Square Enix has been using DLC episodes to cover the gaps identified by players. With Final Fantasy 15’s new content seemingly being designed with player input in mind, it will be interesting to see whether it is able to live up to expectations.

Final Fantasy 15 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
