Naoki Yoshida, otherwise known as Yoshi-P, is famous for being the producer and director of Final Fantasy 14. He is known for having a healthy relationship with the games' players and fans, often listening and making changes based on player praise and criticism. Players have loved Yoshi-P for his history of transparency, and for his good sense of humor.

Being the director of a popular MMORPG does offer some interesting opportunities for developers to play their own game with the public, and Yoshi-P does have his own Final Fantasy 14 character. Besides his own character to control, Yoshi-P has two others: one quest-giver that is based on him and another that is actually him, as he talks to the player via a dream.

Yoshi-P's Lalafell Character

Close-up of Yoshi-P's lalafell.

Yoshi-P has made it known to many that his favorite race in the game is the lalafell. His main class is also Black Mage. In a PlayStation Blog interview, when he was given the choice between dropping either the race or class, he chose the class because he loved lalafell most of all. In terms of what specific kind, Yoshi-P is a Dunesfolk lalafell, which makes sense lore-wise, as their kind were the ones to discover and invent black magic.

The character is easy to spot, as she is named "Yoshi'p Sampo." She has red eyes, black pigtails with red highlights, and comes from the city-state of Ul'dah. She is a part of the Immortal Flames Grand Company, her guardian is Halone, and her Nameday is the 1st Sun of the 1st Astral Moon. The character is known to drift from server to server and, of course, she is the highest level in every class.

However, players must be aware that there are a lot of others that pose as Yoshi-P's character. They make look-a-likes with names that look the same (upon a closer look, they may have a special character or are stylized differently). Yoshi-P has been known to have a special icon next to his name to prove he is real, but he has made official appearances without it as well. The official Final Fantasy 14 Twitter has been known to sometimes report what server Yoshi-P will make an appearance in. Just be prepared for a lot of players crowding his little lalafell character.

Yoshi-P also does not always come on just to bask among fans. This year, his character has been seen in PvP, in the Crystalline Conflict. Some fans even joked that Yoshi-P's main class being Black Mage pushed him to make it so the Black Mages got better buffs. Yoshi-P actually heard these Black Mage complaints, apologized, and changed the buffs.

Yoshi-P's Hyur Characters

Besides Yoshi-P's controlled character, there are two others connected to him. They are both Hyur, the Wandering Minstrel, and Yoshi-P himself. The Wandering Minstrel is a character that has been around since the original game. He is a quest giver, often for optional difficult content and for the annual Rising event that celebrates the anniversary of the Calamity (also when the original game turned off its servers). His entire look is based on Yoshi-P.

A character that is far more on the nose is Naoki Yoshida himself, who appears once a year to talk to the player character and thank the player for playing Final Fantasy 14. He looks just like Yoshi-P, and is often dressed in the latest class gear. For example, this year he dressed in Reaper gear, and he dressed as a Gunbreaker when Shadowbringers was the latest content. This yearly visit from Yoshida to the player character comes in the form of a dream during the Rising event.

Final Fantasy 14 is available now for PC, PS4, and PS5.
